Dynamic Responses of Groundwater Flow and Salt Transport to Storm Surge Inundation in Unconfined Coastal Aquifers

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Storm surges severely salinize coastal aquifers, yet post‐storm subsurface hydrodynamics remain poorly understood. We investigated surge inundation in unconfined tidal aquifers, revealing that subsurface flow recovers much faster than salinity distributions.

Global Improvement of Tropical Cyclone Representation Enhances Hindcasts of Extreme Sea Levels Over 68 Years

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract The underrepresentation of tropical cyclones (TCs) in state‐of‐the‐art atmospheric reanalyses such as ERA5 is well known, yet their impact on global hindcasts of extreme sea levels remains largely unaddressed. We show that weak TC signals in ERA5 cause severe underestimation, and in some cases near omission, of TC‐induced storm surges.

At the edge of change: Native Phragmites persistence and nonnative arrival along the dam‐regulated Colorado River

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 113, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Premise The southwestern United States is at the forefront of nonnative Phragmites australis subsp. australis expansion. Native Phragmites australis subsp. americanus, likely in decline in North America, is ecologically and culturally important and of conservation interest. In the greater Grand Canyon region, the Glen Canyon Dam led to loss of

Dental Microwear Evidence of Holocene Dietary Variability in the Argentinian Pampas and Paraná Delta

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Biological Anthropology, Volume 191, Issue 1, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Objectives This study explores the subsistence strategies of Middle‐to‐Late Holocene human populations in the Argentinean Pampas and Paraná River Delta by analyzing dental microwear patterns. Materials and Methods We examined occlusal molar microwear textures of individuals from the Middle and Late Holocene recovered from 12 archaeological ...
