The behaviour of stellar orbits is examined under the influence of a fixed triaxial potential and a tidal force. Changes in the kinetic energies in the principal directions are computed as a function of tidal interaction times; the important resonances are identified. Resonant interactions are discussed in relation to clusters of galaxies.

Surface velocity fields from tidal interactions
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2009Binary stars in eccentric orbits are the clearest example of stars whose equatorial rotation velocity is not synchronized with orbital motion. Under these conditions, the surface velocity field is perturbed from its purely rotational nature, thus modifying the shape of the observationally‐detectable photospheric absorption lines on a variety of ...

Tidal interactions between galaxies
2005The basic properties of galaxies and simple models of their formation are discussed and different types of interaction between galaxies are described. The dynamics of galactic interactions, statistical approaches and model calculations are reviewed and the significance of interactions in the evolution of galaxies is presented.

Tidal interactions in binary stellar systems
Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy, 1985The tidal interactions in binary stellar systems are studied under the assumption that the orbital motion of the binary is negligible in comparison with the stellar motion. By integrating over time the tidal forces acting on the stars, the energy changes are derived. These are used to obtain simple analytical expressions for the rates of disruption and

Tidal Phenomena in Interacting Galaxies
1990We present evidence for the action of tidal stripping and tidal friction in interacting binary galaxies. This evidence comes from the morphological distortions seen in pairs of elliptical galaxies, and from the kinematic peculiarities seen both in elliptical galaxy rotation curves and in spiral galaxy HI 21cm profiles.
