[Report of] Specialist Committee V.4: ocean, wind and wave energy utilization
The committee's mandate was :Concern for structural design of ocean energy utilization devices, such as offshore wind turbines, support structures and fixed or floating wave and tidal energy converters. Attention shall be given to the interaction between

Numerical validation of the two-scale actuator disc theory for marine turbine arrays [PDF]
The challenge in the hydrodynamic modelling of tidal and marine turbine farms is to take into account the interaction of flow events across a wide range of scales, such as the blade scale, turbine scale, array scale and regional scale.

Sheared turbulent flows and wake dynamics of an idled floating tidal turbine
Ocean energy extraction is on the rise. While tides are the most predictable amongst marine renewable resources, turbulent and complex flows still challenge reliable tidal stream energy extraction and there is also uncertainty in how devices change the ...

Flow direction effects on tidal stream turbines [PDF]
This thesis investigated the non-dimensional performance characteristics of a tidal stream turbine and how\ud they varied in response to changes in flow direction. The problem was considered from an industrial\ud perspective and used the commercial software package ANSYS CFX and a 1:20th scale experimental turbine.\ud Initial considerations analysed ...

Development of a floating tidal energy system suitable for use in shallow water
A proposal is made for the use of a traditional streamwaterwheel suspended between two floating catamaranNPL series demi-hulls as means of generating electricalpower.

Control of an axial flow tidal stream turbine [PDF]
Tidal stream turbines have the potential to generate electricity from a renewable source that is highly predictable and non-polluting. The United Kingdom’s geographical location means that it has one of the most significant wave and tidal resources in the world. The implications of controlling horizontal axial flow, variable speed tidal stream turbines

Optimization of Airfoil Shape for aBidirectional Tidal Stream Turbine
A tidal turbine design needs to consider the harsh environment of the sea. Reducing the number of moving parts is therefore desirable. A tidal stream is relatively predictable with small directional variance. To avoid a yaw gear an attractive option is to instead use a reversible airfoil, allowing the turbine to operate in both ebb and tide.
