Comparison of Single‐Breath and Multi‐Breath Xe‐MRI in the Longitudinal Assessment of Treatment in Children With Cystic Fibrosis

open access: yesJournal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) is a current standard therapy for pediatric cystic fibrosis (CF). Multiple‐breath washout 129Xe MRI (MBW Xe‐MRI) is improved following 1 month of treatment. However, the utility of MBW Xe‐MRI over extended ETI treatment and its comparison to single‐breath Xe‐MRI and pulmonary function tests ...

Jeans Instability of Palomar 5's Tidal Tail [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Tidal tails composed of stars should be unstable to the Jeans instability and this can cause them to look like beads on a string. The Jeans wavelength and tail diameter determine the wavelength and growth rate of the fastest growing unstable mode ...

Raman Signature of the Wings of the Globe Skimmer Dragonfly: Pantala flavescens

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
Raman spectroscopy is used to confirm the presence of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and related derivatives including aldehydes, halides, alcohols, acids, esters, and phenols on the wings of Pantala flavescens. The analysis indicates that wing‐surface lipid composition is largely consistent across the three main ecological zones in Ghana. Notably,

Stellar Escape from Globular Clusters. II. Clusters May Eat Their Own Tails

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We apply for the first time orbit-averaged Monte Carlo star cluster simulations to study tidal tail and stellar stream formation from globular clusters (GCs), assuming a circular orbit in a time-independent spherical Galactic potential.

Tidal Tails In Galactic Globular Clusters

open access: yes, 2018
We will present the status of the VST GTO program “tidal Tails of Five Galactic Globular Clusters” and of the OMEGACAM GTO program “Photometry and Astrometry of the Galactic Globule Cluster Omega Centauri”.

From Globular Clusters to Tidal Dwarfs: Structure Formation in Tidal Tails

open access: yes, 2000
Star clusters can be found in galaxy mergers, not only in central regions, but also in the tidal debris. In both the Eastern and Western tidal tails of NGC 3256 there are dozens of young star clusters, confirmed by their blue colors and larger concentration index as compared to sources off of the tail. Tidal tails of other galaxy pairs do not have such

A 22° Tidal Tail for Palomar 5

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2006
Using Data Release 4 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we have applied an optimal-contrast, matched-filter technique to trace the trailing tidal tail of the globular cluster Palomar 5 to a distance of 185 from the center of the cluster. This more than doubles the total known length of the tail to some 22° on the sky.

Indirect effects of fast‐growing urban development on wildlife in a coastal protected area of Costa Rica

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We studied the effects of urban growth on wildlife near Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas, Costa Rica. Since 1991, buildings increased 1007%, mainly in the buffer zone. We identified eight native species extracting garbage from containers, with raccoons (Procyon lotor) comprising most detections (84%), and four other species being potential sea turtle ...

Serendipitous Catch of a Giant Jellyfish: An Ionized Nebula around 3C 275.1 with 170 kpc Long Tails

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
3C 275.1 is a blue quasar at z = 0.55522, hosting powerful outflows and residing in a complex environment. We present a serendipitously detected giant nebula surrounding 3C 275.1, which shows morphological features resembling those of objects known as ...

H I Tidal Tails, Bridges and Clouds [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 2004
There is plenty of intergalactic HI gas without any obvious stellar content ranging from (1) extended gas envelopes around some normal and peculiar galaxies, (2) tidal tails/bridges in interacting or merging galaxy systems, (3) large-scale rings around early type galaxies, and (4) detached clouds at varying distances from associated galaxies, but there
