Analysis of Wake Turbulence for a Savonius Turbine for Malaysia’s Slow-Moving Current Flow
With Malaysia being surrounded by water bodies, tidal energy could be used for energy extraction. While several turbine designs and technologies have been used for tidal energy extraction, information on the use of vertical-axis tidal turbines (VATTs ...

Studying the Wake of a Tidal Turbine with an IBM-LBM Approach Using Realistic Inflow Conditions
The lattice Boltzmann method is used to model a horizontal axis tidal turbine. Because tidal turbines generally operate in highly turbulent flows, a synthetic eddy method is implemented to generate realistic turbulent inflow condition. The approach makes

Constructive interference effects for tidal turbine arrays
The performance benefits of deploying tidal turbines in close side-by-side proximity to exploit constructive interference effects are demonstrated experimentally using two 1.2 m diameter turbines. The turbines are arrayed side-by-side at 1/4 diameter tip-

Tidal-stream power assessment—A novel modelling approach
An alternative approach for simulating turbine array energy capture, momentum sink-TOC, was developed to improve conventional methodologies for assessing tidal-stream energy resource.

Instabilities in tidal turbine wakes [PDF]
We report on the observation of vortex instabilities in the wake of a tidal turbine undergoing harmonic unsteady axial inflow (e.g. due to surface waves). The work was carried out using unsteady RANS (URANS) modelling using the open-source CFD software OpenFOAM, using the `pimpleDyMFoam' solver.

A review of component and system reliability in tidal turbine deployments
Tidal stream energy has the potential to contribute to global renewable energy generation, but this remains largely untapped. Technical developments have helped create a nascent industry with several pre-commercial installations.

Indonesia has a lot of tidal current energy resources that can be harnessed using a vertical-axis turbine. However, one of the disadvantages of the vertical-axis turbine is its low self-starting capability.

Analysis and Design of Monopile Foundations for Offshore Wind and Tidal Turbine Structures
This paper aims to design an integrated offshore structure capable of supporting a hybrid assembly of one wind plus two tidal turbines. The monopile has been found to be a suitable foundation type as the most inexpensive solution in water depths of less ...
