The effects of oblique waves and currents on the loadings and performance of tidal turbines
Tidal energy exploitation is at an early deployment stage and costs need to be reduced to improve the long term economic viability of the sector. High costs of tidal turbines are, in part, the result of load uncertainties, which lead to the use of high ...

A Conceptual Framework and Methods for Studying the Connectivity of Fishes
ABSTRACT Connectivity is a multifaceted concept that has important implications for the management and conservation of marine and freshwater fishes. We developed a conceptual framework that encompasses multiple, interrelated categories of connectedness, including landscape (e.g., structural, functional) connectivity and ecological (e.g., trophic ...

A contra-rotating marine current turbine on a flexible mooring : development of a scaled prototype [PDF]
The contra-rotating marine current turbine concept developed by the Energy Systems Research Unit at the University of Strathclyde is aimed at extracting energy in a wide range of water depths by 'flying' a neutrally-buoyant device from a flexible ...

Marine mammals are vulnerable to a variety of anthropogenic threats, yet a global systematic map of the literature for 19 species found both spatial and temporal disparity in research effort between threats and between species. There are knowledge gaps for species and threats, with effort unequal across many species' ranges.

Hydrodynamic loadings on a horizontal axis tidal turbine prototype [PDF]
Until recently tidal stream turbine design has been carried out mainly by experimental prototype testing aiming at maximum turbine efficiency. The harsh and highly turbulent environments in which tidal stream turbines operate in poses a design challenge ...

Evaluating the Risk of Collision of Seals Swimming Within Metres of Operating Tidal Turbines
ABSTRACT We used imaging sonar to continuously monitor wildlife at an operational tidal turbine in the Pentland Firth, Scotland, between May 2022 and June 2023. Of 704 detected seal tracks, 347 occurred during turbine operation and 122 of these were detected directly upstream of the rotating blades in the horizontal plane.

ABSTRACT Whether fat oxidation (FATox) is altered during exercise in hypoxia remains equivocal due to differences in experimental protocols. Furthermore, to date no investigation has reported the effect of hypoxia on maximal fat oxidation rate (MFO).

The distribution and tapping tidal energy
Tidal power along tidal shores has been used for centuries to run small tidal mills. Generating electricity by tapping tidal power proved to be very successful only in the last century through the tidal power plant constructed in 1967 in La Rance,
