To the Editor.— In the 19th century, cannabis products were commonly used in the treatment of asthma. 1-3 Smoking marihuana, on the other hand, is associated with bronchitis and other deleterious effects on lung function. 4 The present report deals with acute marihuana effects on pulmonary capacity in nonasthmatic regular marihuana smokers. Method.—

lunginjurydevelopment(RR,0.33;95%CI,0.23-0.47),pulmonary infection (RR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.22-0.92), and mortality (RR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.46-0.89). Although these data seem compelling, several factors must be considered in their interpretation. A total of 15 randomized controlled trials were combined with 5 observational studies, but the observational ...

Effect of tidal volume on ventilation maldistribution
Respiration Physiology, 1986To examine the effect of changing tidal volume (VT) on ventilation distribution, we studied multiple breath nitrogen washouts in 4 normal subjects breathing with a VT of 0.6, 1.0 or 1.5 L. We used a recently developed technique of analysis (Crawford et al., 1985) that distinguishes inhomogeneity of gas concentrations due to the interaction of ...

Respiratory minute volume and tidal volume in normal boys
The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 1966Minute Volume and Tidal Volume were determined in 61 healthy male school boys between the ages of 6 and 16 years. The results of the study was satistically analyzed, and the data compared with the reported values in Western children.

Volume guarantee: Stability of tidal volume and incidence of hypocarbia
Pediatric Pulmonology, 2004AbstractExcessive tidal volume (VT) can lead to lung injury, hypocarbia, and neurologic damage. Volume guarantee (VG) uses exhaled VT as the control variable to reduce the risk of volutrauma and more closely control PaCO2. Our objective was to test the hypothesis that VG combined with assist/control (A/C) will maintain PaCO2 and VT within target range ...

The influence of PEEP and tidal volume on central blood volume
European Journal of Anaesthesiology, 2006Measurement of central blood volumes (CBV), such as global end-diastolic volume (GEDV) and right ventricular end-diastolic volume (RVEDV) are considered appropriate estimates of intravascular volume status. However, to apply those parameters for preload assessment in mechanically ventilated patients, the influence of tidal volume (TV) and positive ...

Impedance measurement of tidal volume and ventilation
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1965Thoracic impedance changes have been used to measure tidal volume and ventilation in normal subjects. Tidal volume was measured directly and total ventilation was accumulated with a diode voltage pump. The size, shape, and placement of the electrodes affected the reliability with which the system measured ventilation.

Quick reference tidal volume cards reduce the incidence of large tidal volumes during surgery
Journal of Anesthesia, 2017Ventilation with large tidal volumes (V T), greater than 10 ml/kg of predicted body weight (PBW), is associated with worse outcomes in critically ill and surgical patients. We hypothesized that the availability of quick reference cards with proposed V T ranges specific to gender and different heights would reduce the intraoperative use of large V T ...

Ventilation with a low tidal volume vs. an intermediate tidal volume during pleural decortication.
Annali italiani di chirurgia, 2022This study aims to evaluate the effects of low tidal volume and positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) combined with pressure-controlled ventilation-volume guaranteed (PCV-VG) ventilation on one lung ventilation (OLV) in patients with tuberculous destroyed lung (TDL).Patients of two groups were all treated with volume controlled ventilation (VCV) on ...

Setting the Frequency-Tidal Volume Pattern
Respiratory Care, 2002Alveolar (and thus arterial) P O2 and P CO2 clearly depend on minute ventilation. However, we need to balance gas exchange goals against the risk of overstretching, especially of the healthier regions of the lung.
