Occurrence of Spores of Tilletia Laevis and T. Tritici in Wheat Deliveries in Western Victoria.

Samples of wheat grain delivered to five receival centres in western Victoria during the 1987188 harvest were examined for the presence of spores of Tilletia laevis and T. tritici. Teliospores of Tilletia tritici (syn. T.caries) were fed to five species of collembolans: Onychiurus cebennarius, Mesaphorura macrochaeta, Folsomia fimetaria, Proisotoma minuta and Orchesella villosa. Faeces were collected from all species. Only faeces from M. macrochaeta did not contain teliospores.

Detection and morphology of hyphae of common bunt fungi (Tilletia laevis and T. tritici) in wheat seedlings

A technique was developed to detect hyphae of the common bunt fungi ( Tilletia laevis and T. tritici) in wheat seedlings. This accurately predicted the subsequent incidence of bunted heads in two field trials. Details of the morphology of Tilletia hyphae in leaf-sheath tissues are given.

Ballistospores and blastic conidia of Tilletia ayresii, and comparison with those of T. tritici and Entyloma ficariae

In Tilletia ayresii on Panicum sp. the sorus, replacing the ovary of the grass, contained thick-walled teliospores and thin-walled Y-shaped spores. Germination of teliospores was not observed, but a few Y-shaped spores germinated to give hyphae from which both blastic conidia and ballistospores were formed.
