The Promise of Tilt Rotor

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1978
Tilt rotor aircraft will add new dimensions to corporate and charter air transportation beginning in the 1980s or 1990s. The tilt rotor combines the VTOL capability of the helicopter with the speed, range, and fuel economy of the turboprop aircraft. The civil use of he helicopter has expanded enormously in the last 25 years because of its effectiveness

The Tilt‐Rotor in Europe

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1989
DESPITE many innovative suggestions over the years designed to fill the gap between conventional fixed wing aircraft and helicopters and with the exception of the Harrier for specific military use, the tilt‐rotor is the only one to reach the development stage.

Modeling and Simulation of a Quad-Tilt Rotor Aircraft

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2013
Abstract Multi-rotor autonomous aerial vehicles have been proposed for several missions where the capability of controlled flight in small areas is required. Unfortunately, small-size electrically powered rotary wings UAVs have usually very short endurance, because of inherent limitation in battery energy density and constraints on maximum weight of ...

Design and Integration of a Tilt-Rotor Flight Simulation Platform

Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 78th Annual Forum and Technology Display, 2022
This paper introduces a tilt-rotor flight simulation platform for research and teaching purposes implementing a real-time simulation of the Bell XV-15 aircraft. The mathematical model of the XV-15 aircraft has been implemented including simplified models for the aerodynamics of the whole aircraft, rotors, and engine dynamics.

Wind-tunnel tests of a tilt-rotor aircraft

The Aeronautical Journal, 2011
AbstractA wide aerodynamic test campaign has been carried out on the tiltrotor aircraft ERICA at the Large Wind Tunnel of Politecnico di Milano by means of a modular 1:8 scale model in order to produce a dataset necessary to better understand the aerodynamic behaviour of the aircraft and to state its definitive design. The target of the tests was the ...

Inverse method in tilt-rotor optimization

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2001
Abstract Tilt-rotor aircraft performance in hover and forward flight modes is optimized using the stiffnesses of the rotor blade as design variables. The performance in both flight modes is maximized simultaneously using a combined objective function.

TILT ROTOR TECHNOLOGY THRUSTS

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1983
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper provides an overview of the results of on-going research investigations associated with the XV-15 program. The XV-15 data and an understanding of the technological elements that go into tilt rotor design can provide a series of benchmark points from which to proceed with new design.

Fused-PID Control for Tilt-Rotor VTOL Aircraft

2020 28th Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation (MED), 2020
This work presents a fused-PID (FPID) control strategy for a tilt-quadrotor VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) where the FPID generates attitude setpoints based on the pilot's velocity commands. The FPID controller consists of two separate PID controllers where one can handle fixed-wing aircraft and the other is designed for multicopters.

Design and Control of a Novel Coaxial Tilt-Rotor UAV

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2022
In this paper, the design and control of a new coaxial tilt-rotor (CTR) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) are presented. The CTRUAV is an electric-powered UAV with a special configuration, which is composed of two pairs of tiltable coaxial rotors and a rear rotor.

Approach Guidance Logic for a Tilt-Rotor Aircraft

Journal of Guidance and Control, 1978
The distinctive feature of a tilt-rotor aircraft is that the pilot can change the rotor mast angles to go from a helicopter configuration for take-off and landing to an airplane configuration for high cruise speeds and vice-versa. An approach path for such an aircraft is proposed and the logic required to fly along this path in the presence of wind is ...
