Inverse method in tilt-rotor optimization

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2001
Abstract Tilt-rotor aircraft performance in hover and forward flight modes is optimized using the stiffnesses of the rotor blade as design variables. The performance in both flight modes is maximized simultaneously using a combined objective function.

Modeling and control of an interactive tilt-rotor MAV

2017 Workshop on Research, Education and Development of Unmanned Aerial Systems (RED-UAS), 2017
The main goal of this paper is to model and control a tilt-rotor aerial robot for interactive operations via a 1DOF robotic manipulator. The modeling is derived by means of the Euler-Lagrange formulation, providing couplings between the robotic manipulator and the rotorcraft. The aerial robot is fully actuated and features thrust vector control, having

Modeling and Simulation of a Quad-Tilt Rotor Aircraft

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2013
Abstract Multi-rotor autonomous aerial vehicles have been proposed for several missions where the capability of controlled flight in small areas is required. Unfortunately, small-size electrically powered rotary wings UAVs have usually very short endurance, because of inherent limitation in battery energy density and constraints on maximum weight of ...

TILT ROTOR TECHNOLOGY THRUSTS

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1983
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper provides an overview of the results of on-going research investigations associated with the XV-15 program. The XV-15 data and an understanding of the technological elements that go into tilt rotor design can provide a series of benchmark points from which to proceed with new design.

Wind-tunnel tests of a tilt-rotor aircraft

The Aeronautical Journal, 2011
AbstractA wide aerodynamic test campaign has been carried out on the tiltrotor aircraft ERICA at the Large Wind Tunnel of Politecnico di Milano by means of a modular 1:8 scale model in order to produce a dataset necessary to better understand the aerodynamic behaviour of the aircraft and to state its definitive design. The target of the tests was the ...

The Rotor Wake Above a Tilt-Rotor Airplane Model in Hover

33rd AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2003
The mean and time-dependent rotor-wake flow over a XV-15 tiltrotor model in hover was studied using stereoscopic particle-image velocimetry. Results from the full-span model were compared to those obtained from a semispan model simulated using an image-plane.

Approach Guidance Logic for a Tilt-Rotor Aircraft

Journal of Guidance and Control, 1978
The distinctive feature of a tilt-rotor aircraft is that the pilot can change the rotor mast angles to go from a helicopter configuration for take-off and landing to an airplane configuration for high cruise speeds and vice-versa. An approach path for such an aircraft is proposed and the logic required to fly along this path in the presence of wind is ...

Tilt Rotor Broadband Hover Aeroacoustics

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1993
To improve the acoustic characteristics of tilt rotor aircraft, the dominant noise mechanisms must be understood. Toward this goal, a method was developed to identify and predict the dominant broadband noise mechanism of a hovering tilt rotor. Predictions are presented for a range of azimuthal observer locations and polar observer angles and are ...

Modeling and control of tilt-rotor aircraft

2016 Chinese Control and Decision Conference (CCDC), 2016
In this paper, a flight dynamics model of a tiltrotor aircraft is developed used basic equations of motion. This model focuses on control aspect of tiltrotor and is able to show inherent tiltrotor characteristics; then a flight control system is designed used novel L1 adaptive control theory.

Review of V/STOL Aircraft with Tilt-Propellers and Tilt-Rotors

The Aeronautical Journal, 1968
SummaryTests of the first experimental VTOL aircraft using tiltable wings and propellers indicated that practical operational aircraft are possible and can operate with a high degree of effectiveness. The flight tests accomplished up to the present time with the second generation tilt-propeller and tilt-rotor aircraft are discussed and analysed.
