Inverse method in tilt-rotor optimization

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2001
Abstract Tilt-rotor aircraft performance in hover and forward flight modes is optimized using the stiffnesses of the rotor blade as design variables. The performance in both flight modes is maximized simultaneously using a combined objective function.

Full‐Scale Tilt‐Rotor Hover Performance

Journal of the American Helicopter Society, 1986
The hover performance of three full-scale rotors was measured at the Ames Outdoor Aerodynamic Research Facility. The rotors, all designed for tilt-rotor aircraft, were the original metal blades for the XV-15 Tilt Rotor Research Aircraft, a set of composite, advanced technology blades for the XV-15, and a 0.658-scale model of the proposed V-22A Osprey ...

The Promise of Tilt Rotor

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1978
Tilt rotor aircraft will add new dimensions to corporate and charter air transportation beginning in the 1980s or 1990s. The tilt rotor combines the VTOL capability of the helicopter with the speed, range, and fuel economy of the turboprop aircraft. The civil use of he helicopter has expanded enormously in the last 25 years because of its effectiveness

Study on the effect of tilting-rotor structure on the lift of small tilt rotor aircraft

2017 2nd International Conference on Advanced Robotics and Mechatronics (ICARM), 2017
In this paper, the influence of the tilting-rotor structure parameters on the aerodynamic characteristics of a small tilt rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is studied. The simplified model of tilt rotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is established by using SolidWorks software, and the model is divided into unstructured grid by ICEM software. Finally,

The Tilt‐Rotor in Europe

Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, 1989
DESPITE many innovative suggestions over the years designed to fill the gap between conventional fixed wing aircraft and helicopters and with the exception of the Harrier for specific military use, the tilt‐rotor is the only one to reach the development stage.

Wind-tunnel tests of a tilt-rotor aircraft

The Aeronautical Journal, 2011
AbstractA wide aerodynamic test campaign has been carried out on the tiltrotor aircraft ERICA at the Large Wind Tunnel of Politecnico di Milano by means of a modular 1:8 scale model in order to produce a dataset necessary to better understand the aerodynamic behaviour of the aircraft and to state its definitive design. The target of the tests was the ...

Modeling and Simulation of Rotor Dynamics of a Tilt-Rotor Aircraft

2017 5th International Conference on Instrumentation, Communications, Information Technology, and Biomedical Engineering (ICICI-BME), 2017
This paper provides a model of rotor dynamics which is derived mathematically and develops it into a numerical simulation model. The mathematical model was derived by reviewing the kinematic phenomena of a rotating blade and connected them with corresponding forces and moments working on the blade.

The Rotor Wake Above a Tilt-Rotor Airplane Model in Hover

33rd AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2003
The mean and time-dependent rotor-wake flow over a XV-15 tiltrotor model in hover was studied using stereoscopic particle-image velocimetry. Results from the full-span model were compared to those obtained from a semispan model simulated using an image-plane.

Control of a PVTOL with tilting rotors

2019 International Conference on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (ICUAS), 2019
This paper introduces the modeling and control of a Planar Vertical Take Off and Landing (PVTOL) aircraft with tilting rotors. The mathematical model is obtained step by step using the Newton-Euler methodology. Its nonlinear dynamics of this aircraft are analyzed and controlled using a nonlinear and a linear algorithm. The controllers were validated in

Extractor X — Autonomous Tilt Rotor UAV

Unmanned Systems, 2013
This paper looks into conceptualization, implementation and validation of the potential role that hybrid quad tilt rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) may undertake in the near future, especially so in military applications. A tilt rotor is designed, built and analyzed with wind tunnel data, theoretical calculations and flight log data.
