Tiltrotor Conversion Maneuver Analysis with RCAS

Journal of the American Helicopter Society, 2020
Aeromechanics analysis is performed using the comprehensive analysis code RCAS (Rotorcraft Comprehensive Analysis System) to study the transient conversion maneuver of a tiltrotor. The analytical model is based on the XV-15 research tiltrotor aircraft in size and dynamic characteristics.

Adaptive nonlinear control for tiltrotor aircraft

Proceedings of the 1998 IEEE International Conference on Control Applications (Cat. No.98CH36104), 2002
The combination of feedback linearization and adaptive 'neural' networks provides a powerful controller architecture. This paper presents some of the nonlinear, and adaptive flight control research being conducted in this area in the School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Tech.

Analysis of vibrations of an innovative civil tiltrotor

Aerospace Science and Technology, 2013
Abstract This paper presents the assessment of vibratory levels of the tiltrotor ERICA. It is the result of a joint activity of University Roma Tre rotorcraft group and AgustaWestland, within the European Integrated Project NICETRIP. The loads transmitted by the wing to the fuselage are evaluated by a wing–pylon–proprotor aeroelastic model which ...

Military potential of TiltRotor aircraft

The Aeronautical Journal, 1983
The TiltRotor concept combines the wing of an aircraft with the rotors of a helicopter. The result is a VTOL aircraft which is fuel-efficient in both cruise and hover. It can be thought of as a turboprop aircraft which can take off and land vertically, but it is also an advanced rotorcraft which has twice the speed and range of present-day helicopters ...

Empirical Wake Turbulence Model of Tiltrotor Aircraft

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2005
<div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper describes the methods used to collect and reduce wake turbulence data behind two distinct types of tiltrotor aircraft using a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) measurement system, which uses laser velocimetry to measure the velocity of dust particles in air that has been disturbed by the passage of an ...

Civil Tiltrotor - A New Transportation Alternative

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1996
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The Congress directed the Secretary of Transportation to establish a Civil Tiltrotor Development Advisory Committee (CTRDAC). This committee examined the costs, technical feasibility, and economic viability of developing civil tiltrotor (CTR) aircraft; the integration of CTR aircraft into the national ...

Hybrid intelligent adaptive controller for tiltrotor UAV

International Journal of Intelligent Unmanned Systems, 2020
PurposeIn this paper, an innovative hybrid intelligent position control method for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) tiltrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is proposed. So the more accurate the reference position signals tracking, the proposed control system will be better.Design/methodology/approachIn the proposed method, for the vertical flight ...

AEROMECHANICS MODELLING OF TILTROTOR AIRCRAFT

2019
A numerical investigation into the effects of aerodynamic interaction modelling for tiltrotor aircraft is undertaken. The study compares a baseline case, with no interaction accounted for, with those that include the download on the wing and the rotor and wing wakes at the empennage against literature models.

Collective Bounce Problems on Tiltrotors

2016
The basic mechanism of the collective bounce phenomenon on tiltrotors is discussed. This phenomenon may arise if the pilot’s biomechanics interact with the airframe elastic modes, in particular with the 1st Symmetric Wing Bending (SWB) mode. A simplified aeroelastic tiltrotor model, able to capture the aircraft heave motion and the low–frequency out-of

ERICA tiltrotor airframe wake characterization

2015
In the framework of the European JTI CleanSky GRC2 project devoted to drag reduction of airframe and non-lifting rotating systems of the Green Rotorcraft ITD, a CFD-based optimization was performed on the ERICA tiltrotor configuration and validated by wind tunnel tests. Previous work dealt with the shape optimization of different parts of the tiltrotor
