Second-generation mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitors such as CC-223 may have theoretical advantages over first-generation drugs by inhibiting TOR kinase in mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) and 2 (mTORC2), potentially improving clinical efficacy for ...

The Mice at play in the CALIFA survey: A case study of a gas-rich major merger between first passage and coalescence [PDF]
We present optical integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of the Mice, a major merger between two massive (>10^11Msol) gas-rich spirals NGC4676A and B, observed between first passage and final coalescence.

Modeling Defects, Shape Evolution, and Programmed Auto-origami in Liquid Crystal Elastomers [PDF]
Liquid crystal elastomers represent a novel class of programmable shape-transforming materials whose shape change trajectory is encoded in the material's nematic director field.

Hybrid Magnetoactive Soft Elastomers: Material Development Toward Application in Diaphragm Pumps
Hybrid magnetoactive soft elastomeric membranes are developed by combining two different types of magnetic particles. The membranes exhibit distinct mechanical, magnetic and thermal properties owing to the unique characteristics of the two magnetic particles.

Laser‐assisted synthesis enables rapid (within 1 h) and high‐yield (≥90%) production of Co‐MOFs with mesoporous structures, tunable magnetic and optical properties, and efficient adsorption of N2, CH4, and CO2 for low‐energy gas separation. DFT calculations elucidate the electronic structure and adsorption behavior.

Uncovering regulatory pathways that affect hematopoietic stem cell function using 'genetical genomics' [PDF]
We combined large-scale mRNA expression analysis and gene mapping to identify genes and loci that control hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) function. We measured mRNA expression levels in purified HSCs isolated from a panel of densely genotyped recombinant ...
