Social and cultural considerations for the restoration of ‘lost’ tree species: The fall and rise of elm

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Attempts to address biodiversity loss have led to ecosystem and species restoration efforts. Tree species restoration is particularly relevant because of increasing threats from pests and pathogens. However, there are different notions of ‘loss’, as well as sociocultural considerations, including social acceptability, which are often neglected

From experiencing biodiversity to action: How significant life experiences shape values and inspire bird conservation engagement

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Problem and aim: Bird biodiversity loss is a pressing global challenge that requires behavioural engagement, yet the motivational pathways leading to active bird conservation remain underexplored. This study investigates how significant life experiences (SLEs) and environmental values (biospheric, altruistic, hedonistic, egoistic) shape ...

A manifesto for plant science education

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Plants provide oxygen, food, shelter, medicines and environmental services, without which human society could not exist. Tackling pressing and global challenges requires well‐trained plant scientists and plant‐aware individuals. This manifesto provides a practical evidence‐based vision to strengthen plant science education, focussed on five strategic ...

Timber frame load bearing structures made of roundwood [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
In this bachelor’s thesis, a general description about the construction of skeletal structures out of roundwood is introduced. This method of construction involves buildings built from cross section uncut logs, as found in nature.

Simulated elephant foraging alters tree root exudation rates: Species‐specific responses and implications for belowground carbon dynamics in tropical forests

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Asian elephants play crucial roles in ecosystem functioning, and their interactions with plants influence above‐ and belowground carbon cycling. We tested whether their mechanically destructive foraging triggers short‐term, stress‐induced shifts in tree root exudation, an underappreciated pathway linking herbivory to belowground carbon processes.

The influence of environmental parameters on the thermographic analysis of the building envelope [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Typically, thermographic measurements are used to analyze the building envelope in a qualitative way (e.g. detection of thermal bridges, missing insulation, etc.).
