Portable Sawmilling Costs for Landholders in Western Queensland [PDF]

open access: yes
Portable sawmilling trials with Acacia aneura (mulga) and A. cambagei (gidgee) have been undertaken to estimate the private landholder costs associated with small-scale timber production from woodlands in western Queensland, Australia.

Dealing With Inbuilt Age: A Bayesian Approach to Radiocarbon Dating of Rice, Bamboo and Charcoal From Non Ban Jak, Thailand

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT New radiocarbon determinations from rice grains and bamboo have been obtained from Non Ban Jak, Northeast Thailand. These, along with charcoal, date a late Iron Age building sequence. The results come from short‐lived species and charcoal with potential inbuilt age. We built a series of Bayesian models to obtain a reliable chronology.

Informal supply chains of wild meat from rural Amazonia and food security in an urban center

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Iquitos, the most populated city in the Peruvian Amazon, is a hub in the regional supply chain of wild meat and supplies urban consumers. Studies on wild meat consumption have focused primarily on markets, limiting the scope of species considered to those that are economically valuable and potential inferences from those data.

Optimal management of a flammable forest providing timber and carbon sequestration benefits: an Australian case study

open access: yes
In deciding to keep or fell a forest stand given its age, the risk of loss of timber through wildfire is an important consideration. If trees also have value from sequestration of carbon, another effect of fire is the unplanned loss of stored carbon ...

Emerging applications of large language models in ecology and conservation science

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Large language models (LLMs) mark a major development in artificial intelligence, with potentially transformative implications for ecology and conservation science. Built on advanced deep‐learning architectures, these models can support a wide range of tasks. We reviewed emerging applications of LLMs, drawing on the wider scientific literature

ON THE OPTIMAL DEPLETION OF OLD-GROWTH FORESTS AND THE PRESERVATION OF WILDERNESS

open access: yes
The problem of optimal depletion of old-growth forests and establishment of plantations is explored. The old-growth has value for the timber products it contains and the wilderness services it provides if left unharvested.

Integrating traditional practices, livelihoods, and conservation with Indigenous‐led furbearer camera trapping

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Contemporary conservation goals have a greater chance of success when practitioners collaborate with Indigenous communities. The importance of such collaborations has spurred calls by Western and Indigenous researchers to engage in equitable coproduction of ecological research that integrates multiple ways of knowing.
