Abstract Sediment in forested watersheds is produced primarily from highly disturbed areas such as skid trails. Forestry best management practices (BMPs) have been developed to minimize erosion and water quality problems, but the efficacies of various BMP options such as water bars are not well documented.

Difficulties in assessing environmental suitability of timber skidding
2008This paper presents the way and measuring problems of assesing environmental suitability of timber skidding. Research results are based on uphill and downhill skidding on two skid trails with a slope of 15 % and 30 %. Measurement of wheel loads was performed by tensiometric method.

The level of environmental damage from timber harvesting depending on skidding methods
2008The need to create the methodology of assessing the level of ecological damage caused by timber harvesting seems to be unquestionable. Analysis of relevant research done both in Poland and abroad shows that it is considerably difficult to asses harvesting damage to forest in an objective and complex way.

The Influence of the Skidding Distance on the Value of Damage done to the Surface Soil Layer in the Course of Timber Harvesting in Pine Thinnings [PDF]
The requirement to apply those timber harvesting technologies which are the least damaging to the environment ought to be put into the management practice of the State Forests as a priority. In recent years, a number of research and implementation tasks have been undertaken in this respect.

Determining the fuel consumption of a cable skidder TAF 690 PE for timber skidding in Western Stara Planina [PDF]
Fuel consumption when skidding wood is one of the main indicators that form the cost price of the final product and depends both on the conditions under which logging takes place and on the performance characteristics of the machines. For this purpose, observations were made to determine the fuel consumption of the TAF 690 PE cable skidder when ...
