Characterisation of sedimentary structure and hydraulic behaviour within the unsaturated zone of the Triassic Sherwood Sandstone aquifer in North East England [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A study of the sedimentological framework and permeability characteristics of the Sherwood Sandstone has been undertaken together with a detailed investigation of moisture migration in the vadose zone at a single field site.

Complex and thermodynamic properties of polar liquids using time domain reflectometry [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Dielectrics, 2018
The study of complex properties in a binary mixture of 1,2-dichloroethane (DE) and n-methylformamide (NMF) polar liquids has been carried out in the frequency range of 10MHz to 30GHz for 11 different concentrations using time domain reflectometry ...

Effects of deficit irrigation and biostimulants on melon productivity and quality in semi‐arid conditions

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Water scarcity and soil salinization are major constraints to irrigated agriculture in semi‐arid regions, affecting crop productivity and fruit quality. Combining deficit irrigation with biostimulant application has emerged as a promising strategy to improve water use efficiency and plant stress tolerance.

Modular and Deformable Touch-Sensitive Surfaces Based on Time Domain Reflectometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Time domain reflectometry, a technique originally used in diagnosing cable faults, can also locate where a cable is being touched. In this paper, we explore how to extend time domain reflectometry in order to touch-enable thin, modular, and deformable ...

Automated Photothermal Control of Block Copolymer Self‑Assembly and Metal Oxide Nanostructures Sintering

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
This study presents a microscope‐based photothermal platform that integrates structured laser light projection with machine‐learning‐optimized illumination. By employing neural‐network models to predict and generate thermal profiles, the platform achieves precise thermal processing of block copolymer films.

Embedding Fiber Segment Interferometry for Localization of Defects in Composite Structures

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Graphical representation of composite structures with embedded fiber optic sensors for structural health monitoring, enabling strain measurement and damage localization under mechanical loading. ABSTRACT In the area of structural health monitoring (SHM), embedding strain sensors into smart composites is a key strategy for detecting failures arising ...

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Frequency-and-Time Division Multiplexed Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry

open access: yesPhotonic Sensors
Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) is a key technique for distributed fiber sensing of strain and temperature, but performance is constrained by the inherently weak spontaneous Brillouin signal.

Nondestructive Evaluation of Coatings Delamination Using Microwave Time Domain Reflectometry Technique

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
Ceramic based coatings such as Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs) are widely deposited onto gas turbine engine components to protect their metal substrate against high temperature.

Wave‐Velocity‐Based Temperature Monitoring Applied to Underground Power Cables in Medium‐Voltage Networks—Discrimination of Individual Cable Temperatures in a Distribution Grid

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The thermal state of underground power cables can be monitored based on the temperature dependency of the dielectric permittivity of the insulation material. The resulting temperature‐dependent wave velocity is used as a thermometric property. To this end, the signal propagation time along a cable of an injected signal is determined.
