Early estimation of the reproduction number in the presence of imported cases: pandemic influenza H1N1-2009 in New Zealand. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
We analyse data from the early epidemic of H1N1-2009 in New Zealand, and estimate the reproduction number R. We employ a renewal process which accounts for imported cases, illustrate some technical pitfalls, and propose a novel estimation method to ...

Bł. Bartłomiej Longo: wynagrodzenie, które ma moc z satanisty uczynić nawróconego człowieka błogosławionym [PDF]

open access: yesJęzyk. Religia. Tożsamość, 2022
Bartolo Longo is an example of a man who, despite being in a sect for a time, converted, made amends for his faults, became an apostle of the rosary, the initiator of the shrine at Pompeii, and ultimately a blessed of the Church.

Challenges and pitfalls of time constrained hydraulic projects

open access: yesInternational conference Fluid Power 2021: Conference Proceedings, 2021
Almost all projects nowadays are fast paced as all industries are trying to shorten time to market and hydraulics is no exception. In order to compete in such environments all the processes in the company from engineering throughout production have to be streamlined, so they are able to effectively follow the ever-changing project requirements ...

A Quasi-Bayesian Perspective to Online Clustering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
When faced with high frequency streams of data, clustering raises theoretical and algorithmic pitfalls. We introduce a new and adaptive online clustering algorithm relying on a quasi-Bayesian approach, with a dynamic (i.e., time-dependent) estimation of ...

Empty colon: a pitfall in the assessment of colonic transit time [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Pediatrics, 2011
We report a misleading outcome of colonic transit time (CTT) assessment in an adolescent girl with functional constipation. We found prolonged total and right segmental CTT despite high doses of oral polyethylene glycol 4000 and repeated treatment with polyethylene glycol-electrolyte solution (Klean-Prep®) by nasogastric tube.

On pitfalls in accuracy verification using time-dependent problems

open access: yesJournal of Computational Physics, 2023
In this short note, we discuss the circumstances that can lead to a failure to observe the design order of discretization error convergence in accuracy verification when solving a time-dependent problem. In particular, we discuss the problem of failing to observe the design order of spatial accuracy with an extremely small time step.

Retrieving fMRI data in real-time: difficulties and pitfalls

open access: yes, 2022
ABSTRACT One of the significant challenges in real-time fMRI environments is to ensure that the functional images are exported in real-time. The prerequired ability to reconstruct these images immediately after the acquisition has already been resolved in 2004.

Neural Networks with Non-Uniform Embedding and Explicit Validation Phase to Assess Granger Causality [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A challenging problem when studying a dynamical system is to find the interdependencies among its individual components. Several algorithms have been proposed to detect directed dynamical influences between time series.

The Need for Perform ance Criteria in Evaluating the Durability of W ood Products

open access: yesForestist, 2008
Data generated İroni vvood-product durability evaluatioııs can be difficult to interpret. Standard metlıods used to evaluate the potential loııg-term durability of vvood products often provide little guidance on interpretation of test results ...
