Stochastic modelling of the spatial spread of influenza in Germany [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
In geographical epidemiology, disease counts are typically available in discrete spatial units and at discrete time-points. For example, surveillance data on infectious diseases usually consists of weekly counts of new infections in pre-defined ...

Global Heated Tobacco Product User Estimates, 2014-2024: Descriptive Surveillance Study Using Manufacturer Disclosures

open access: yesJMIR Public Health and Surveillance
BackgroundHeated tobacco products (HTPs) expanded rapidly after 2014; yet globally, comparable estimates of the number of HTP users remain limited. National surveys rarely include standardized HTP measures, and international surveillance systems do not ...

Explaining offenders’ longitudinal product-specific target selection through changes in disposability, availability, and value: an open-source intelligence web-scraping approach

open access: yesCrime Science, 2022
Objective To address the gap in the literature and using a novel open-source intelligence web-scraping approach, this paper investigates the longitudinal relationships between availability, value, and disposability, and stealing counts of specific makes ...

DNA ligase LigE increases bacterial transformation with damaged extracellular DNA

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The DNA ligase LigE from the naturally competent Gram‐negative bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoaea increases transformation with cut extracellular DNA. This process is ATP‐dependent and relies on the catalytic activity of LigE; it also requires that LigE contains an intact periplasmic localisation sequence, indicating that ligE functions in the periplasm ...

A Time Series Analysis of Monthly Fire Counts in Ontario, Canada, with Consideration of Climate Teleconnections

open access: yesFire
Climate change can impact various facets of a region’s fire regime, such as the frequency and timing of fire ignitions. This study examines the temporal trends of monthly fire counts in the Northwest and Northeast Regions of Ontario, Canada, between 1960

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

A two-component model for counts of infectious diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We propose a stochastic model for the analysis of time series of disease counts as collected in typical surveillance systems on notifiable infectious diseases.

Sunspot number recalibration: The ~1840–1920 anomaly in the observer normalization factors of the group sunspot number

open access: yesJournal of Space Weather and Space Climate, 2017
We analyze the normalization factors (k′-factors) used to scale secondary observers to the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) reference series of the Hoyt & Schatten (1998a, 1998b) group sunspot number (GSN).

Stimulator of interferon genes agonist augmented antitumor immunity of osimertinib in Egfr‐mutated lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining osimertinib with the STING agonist ADU‐S100 activates innate and adaptive immunity to overcome the non‐inflamed microenvironment of Egfr‐mutant lung cancer. This combination increases NK and CD8+ T‐cell infiltration, associated with activation of the STING‐IRF3 pathway and local immunogenic cell death.

Loss of IGF‐1R impairs DNA‐PKcs recruitment to chromatin leading to defective end‐joining

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
IGF‐1R promotes radioresistance by facilitating DNA‐PKcs recruitment to chromatin, enabling non‐homologous end‐joining (NHEJ) repair of double‐strand breaks. Inhibition or loss of IGF‐1R disrupts this recruitment to damage sites, driving compensatory reliance on microhomology‐mediated end‐joining (MMEJ) repair.
