Capriccio all’antica. Shaping the Ruin in the Age of Enlightenment [PDF]

open access: yesRevue Roumaine d'Histoire de l'Art : Série Beaux-Arts, 2012
From its outset in the 14th century, the poetics of ruin underwent a gradual mutation from nostalgic lamentation to romancing reverie. However, it was during the age of Enlightenment, and in the context of archaeological discoveries and picturesque ...

On the computation of upper approximations to ultimate ruin probabilities in case of DFR claimsize distributions

open access: yesStatistica, 2007
In the present note we consider the classical continuous time model of the collective theory of risk under the assumption that the claimsize distribution is DFR (decreasing failure rate) so that, according to well known queueing results, the ultimate ...

Understanding bio‐based polymers: A study of origins, properties, biodegradation and their impact on health and the environment

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review provides an overview of bio‐based polymer sources, their unique functional properties and their environmental impact, and addresses their role as sustainable alternatives. It discusses end‐of‐life options, including composting and anaerobic digestion for renewable energy.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.

The Compound Binomial Risk Model with Randomly Charging Premiums and Paying Dividends to Shareholders

open access: yesJournal of Applied Mathematics, 2013
Based on characteristics of the nonlife joint-stock insurance company, this paper presents a compound binomial risk model that randomizes the premium income on unit time and sets the threshold for paying dividends to shareholders.

On the Expected Discounted Penalty Function Using Physics-Informed Neural Network

open access: yesJournal of Mathematics, 2023
We study the expected discounted penalty at ruin under a stochastic discount rate for the compound Poisson risk model with a threshold dividend strategy. The discount rate is modeled by a Poisson process and a standard Brownian motion.

Cutaneous Melanoma Drives Metabolic Changes in the Aged Bone Marrow Immune Microenvironment

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, increasingly affects older adults. Our study reveals that melanoma induces changes in iron and lipid levels in the bone marrow, impacting immune cell populations and increasing susceptibility to ferroptosis.

Phase-type Approximations to Finite-time Ruin Probabilities in the Sparre-Andersen and Stationary Renewal Risk Models [PDF]

open access: yesASTIN Bulletin, 2005
The present paper extends the “Erlangization” idea introduced by Asmussen, Avram, and Usabel (2002) to the Sparre-Andersen and stationary renewal risk models. Erlangization yields an asymptotically-exact method for calculating finite time ruin probabilities with phase-type claim amounts. The method is based on finding the probability of ruin prior to a

Association of Corticospinal Tract Asymmetry With Ambulatory Ability After Intracerebral Hemorrhage

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Ambulatory ability after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is important to patients. We tested whether asymmetry between ipsi‐ and contra‐lesional corticospinal tracts (CSTs) assessed by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is associated with post‐ICH ambulation.

A Qualitative Analysis of Patient Perspectives and Preferences in Lupus Management to Guide Lupus Guidelines Development

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective A patient‐centered approach for chronic disease management, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), aligns treatment with patients’ values and preferences, leading to improved outcomes. This paper summarizes how patient experiences, perspectives, and priorities informed the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 2024 Lupus Nephritis (LN)
