Predictive factors of tinnitus after vestibular schwannoma surgery: a case-control study

open access: yesChinese Neurosurgical Journal
Background Tinnitus is very common in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS). We analyzed the related factors of tinnitus after surgery. Methods One hundred seventy-three patients diagnosed with unilateral VS operated via the retrosigmoid approach were

Severity‐Graded MRI‐Detected TMJ Effusion Is Associated With Pain and Dysfunction in Temporomandibular Disorder Patients

open access: yesJournal of Oral Rehabilitation, EarlyView.
In patients with TMJ arthralgia, MRI‐detected joint effusion was graded from Grade 0 (no effusion) to Grade 2 (moderate‐to‐severe effusion) using T2‐weighted and proton density‐weighted images. Increasing effusion severity was associated with greater pain intensity and mandibular dysfunction.

Defining tinnitus: a socratic and epistemological inquiry

open access: yesFrontiers in Audiology and Otology
Defining tinnitus using a Socratic approach poses a philosophical challenge: identifying features that are shared by all instances of tinnitus and only tinnitus.

Effect of artificial gravity on calcaneal bone marrow adipose tissue and mineral content in female and male participants in 60 days of bed rest

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Modulation of bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) with prolonged inactivity was reported in haemopoietic but not in non‐haemopoietic bones. This prospective randomized controlled trial submitted 16 men and 8 women to 60 days of 6° head‐down‐tilt bed rest.

Astrocytes and Tinnitus

open access: yesBrain Sciences
Tinnitus is correlated with anomalies of neural plasticity and has been found to be affected by inflammatory status. The current theories on tinnitus, although still somewhat incomplete, are based on maladaptive plasticity mechanisms. Astrocytes play a major role in both neural responses to inflammation and plasticity regulation; moreover, they have ...

An eye on long‐duration spaceflight: Controversies, countermeasures and challenges

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Space flight‐associated neuroocular syndrome (SANS) is a consequence of long‐duration space flight and is detected in two‐thirds of astronauts. In‐flight, this can cause a change in the refraction of the eyes, requiring graded hypermetropic ‘superfocus adjustable’ glasses, optic nerve head oedema and choroidal folds.

Carotid artery dissection linked to intermittent apnoeic swimming: A case–control study

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection is a rare and potentially devastating cause of cerebral ischaemia, initiated by an intimal tear or rupture of the vasa vasorum, that can lead to an intraluminal thrombus, vascular stenosis, occlusion, or dissecting aneurysm formation.

Tonotopically distinct OFF responses arise in the mouse auditory midbrain following sideband suppression

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Sounds of different frequencies elicit spatially distinct patterns of neural activity within the inferior colliculus aligned to the tonotopic organization of afferent projections. Sound‐evoked neural responses can be visualized in awake mice that express fluorescent Ca2+ sensors.
