Objective and subjective tinnitus can often be differentiated based on comprehensive history, physical examination, and audiogram. Examples of objective tinnitus include vascular abnormalities, palatal myoclonus, patulous eustachian tube, and stapedial/tensor tympani muscle spasm. Subjective tinnitus is usually associated with hearing loss.

Chronic idiopathic subjective tinnitus is a common condition affecting around one in ten of the population at any given time. For the majority of people it is an annoyance rather than a major health issue but for approximately 0.5 per cent of the population tinnitus interferes with their ability to pursue a normal life.

Tinnitus is a common symptom for which there is in most cases no causal therapy. The search for an improvement of tinnitus through pharmacological interventions has a long tradition. The observation that tinnitus can be transiently suppressed by the use of lidocaine has shown that the symptom is susceptible to pharmacotherapy.

A retrospective study of tinnitus sufferers who had committed suicide was undertaken. A questionnaire was compiled, and circulated world-wide. Adequate information was obtained on 28 suicides. An association between suicide and left-sided tinnitus reported previously, was not conclusively replicated.
