Optimization of Varibable Pitching for VAWT at Low Tip Speed Ratio
Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Engineering & MIS 2020, 2020In this work, variable active control pitching is applied to overcome the incapability of self-starting in NACA0018 three-bladed Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). The study is conducted at low tip speed ratio of zero, and one, using CFD SST turbulent Model in COMSOL Multyphysics (FEM Solver).

Wind energy from turbulence: Constant tip speed ratio operation
Solar Energy, 1985Abstract The ability of a wind machine, operating at constant tip speed ratio, to extract power from the turbulent eddy fluctuations in the wind is examined. A model is constructed relating the inertia of the machine to its ability to follow the fluctuations. The model includes a transfer function from which a cutoff frequency can be predicted.

Windmill Tip-Speed Ratio Regulation Using an Impedance-Matching Control System
Journal of Solar Energy Engineering, 1985A discussion of the approaches to, and benefits of, windmill tip-speed ratio (TSR) control is presented. Rotational speed regulation via load-controlled impedance matching is identified as the most efficient control method. An all-mechanical, self-powered windmill TSR controller using this method is presented with a discussion of its operation and wind

Tip speed ratio control of wind turbine generating system connected in series
2011 International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems, 2011Experimental and simulated investigations of tip speed ratio control for a wind turbine generating system consisting of series connected two wind turbine/generators and a current-source thyristor inverter are carried out. It is confirmed that tip speed ratios of the individual turbines can be controlled almost constant when wind velocities fluctuated ...

Achieving optimum tip-speed-ratio of a two-mass wind turbine system
2016 IEEE International Conference on Power and Energy (PECon), 2016This paper proposes a three term PID controller to achieve optimum tip-speed ratio of a variable speed fixed pitch two-mass wind turbine system. The main advantage of the method is the functional simplicity and the robust performance in a wide range of operating condition.

Maximum wind turbine performance at low tip speed ratio
Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2015Wind turbines can approach the Betz-Joukowsky limit on maximum power only at sufficiently high tip speed ratio: in practice, for ratios in excess of about seven. This paper analyses the performance of a turbine with an infinite number of blades as the tip speed ratio decreases to zero, beginning with the two traditional ways of determining the maximum ...
