Rotor aerodynamic power limits at low tip speed ratio using CFD

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2014
When investigating limits of rotor aerodynamic models, the Betz limit serves as a solid marker of an upper limit which no model should be able to exceed. A century ago Joukowsky (1912) proposed a rotor aerodynamic model utilizing a rotating actuator disc with a constant circulation.

A Practical Noise2Noise Denoising Pipeline for High‐Throughput Raman Spectroscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A lightweight and reproducible denoising pipeline for high‐throughput Raman spectroscopy is introduced, based on a 1D convolutional autoencoder trained with a Noise2Noise strategy. Using only repeated short‐exposure acquisitions, the method suppresses stochastic noise without reference spectra, enabling reliable spectral reconstruction while preserving

Brief communication: Real-time estimation of the optimal tip-speed ratio for controlling wind turbines with degraded blades [PDF]

open access: yesWind Energy Science
Rotor performance is adversely affected by the wear and tear of blade surfaces caused, for example, by rain, snow, icing, dirt, bugs and aging. Blade surface degradation changes the aerodynamic properties of the rotor, which in turn changes the optimal ...

External and Internal Cracking Caused by Heat Treatment in Laser Powder Bed Fusion‐Fabricated Inconel 738LC Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Manufacturing problems such as heat treatment‐induced cracking hinder the widespread application of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process to superalloys. In this study, cracks in the LPBF components of Inconel 738LC superalloy are characterized after heat treatment at various temperature ranges, revealing two distinct cracking behaviors.

High‐Resolution Corrosion Fingerprinting of Alloy Libraries via Microdroplet Spectroelectrochemistry

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic‐liquid microdroplet spectroelectrochemistry enables stable, localized electrochemical measurements over extended timescales. By coupling impedance spectroscopy, wetting analysis, finite‐element simulations, and operando Raman spectroscopy, it disentangles geometrical and electrochemical effects, opening new opportunities for rapid corrosion ...

Unlocking the power of the wind: Innovations in smart hybrid vertical axis wind turbines

open access: yesInternational Journal of Renewable Energy Development
As global concerns about CO2 emissions grow, the development of green energy sources like wind power has become increasingly important. Two significant strengths of vertical-axis wind turbines relative to horizontal-axis models are their capacity to ...

Enhancing Fatigue Crack Growth Resistance in Heterostructured Aluminum Bimetals by Tailored Interface Design

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Different Al/Al bimetals with a single engineered interface reveal how mechanical mismatch governs fatigue crack growth under cyclic loading. Additionally, loading–unloading–reloading tests link the microyielding behavior to the fatigue crack growth resistance, while crack‐path analysis reveals toughening mechanisms at the interface, highlighting ...

Application of Richardson extrapolation method to the CFD simulation of vertical-axis wind turbines and analysis of the flow field

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics, 2019
There is still discrepancy regarding the verification of CFD U-RANS simulations of vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs). In this work, the applicability of the Richardson extrapolation method to assess mesh convergence is studied for several points in the

Influence of the tip speed ratio on the wake dynamics and recovery of axial-flow turbines

open access: yesPhysics of Fluids
Detached eddy simulation is employed to investigate the wake development downstream of the rotor of an axial-flow turbine and its dependence on the tip speed ratio. In this study, we found that the trend of the momentum deficit as a function of the rotational speed shows opposite directions in the near wake and further downstream.

Distinct Microstructural Characteristic Lengths Defining Notch Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation, and Defect Tolerance in Advanced Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of modes of microcrack nucleation, growth and temporary arrestment at different boundaries, with the criteria for crack propagation in three scenarios: (1) large notch, (2) defect/small sharp notch, and (3) long crack. This work revisits and integrates results on the fatigue behavior of advanced bainitic steels (in particular ...
