Tip Gap Effects on the Unsteady Behavior of a Tip Leakage Vortex
AIAA Journal, 2007The effects of tip gap on the unsteady behavior of a tip leakage vortex downstream of an idealized axial compressor rotor blade have been investigated in a linear cascade wind tunnel, extending the study of Ma and Devenport. The wind tunnel features a moving end wall to simulate the relative motion between the rotor and casing, and vortex generator ...

PIV Measurements of a Tip Leakage Vortex
SNAME 26th American Towing Tank Conference, 2001The tip-leakage vortex occurring on a ducted rotor was examined using both three component Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and planar Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV). The vortex strength and core size were examined for different vortex cross sections downstream of the blade trailing edge. The variability of these quantities are observed with PIV and

Tip Leakage Losses in Subsonic and Transonic Blade-Rows
Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2011In this paper the effect of blade-exit Mach number on unshrouded turbine tip-leakage flows is investigated. Previously published experimental data of a high-pressure turbine blade are used to validate a CFD code, which is then used to study the tip-leakage flow at blade-exit Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.4.

The Tip Leakage Vortex Shed from an Unsteady Tip Clearance Flow
34th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2004*† ‡ , The interaction between the rotor blade tip leakage flow and inflow disturbances, such as encountered in shrouded marine propulsors, was simulated in the Virginia Tech Linear Cascade Wind Tunnel equipped with a moving endwall system. The idealized periodic inflow unsteadiness was generated using vortex generator pairs upstream of the blade row ...

Tip leakage aerodynamics over stepped squealer tips in a turbine cascade
Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, 2011Abstract Tip gap flow physics and aerodynamic loss generations for two stepped squealer tips of a “Higher Pressure-side rim and Lower Suction-side rim” (HPLS) tip and a “Lower Pressure-side rim and Higher Suction-side rim” (LPHS) tip have been investigated in a turbine cascade.

Control of Tip Leakage Vortex Breakdown by Tip Injection in Unshrouded Turbines
Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2014Tip leakage flow is responsible for a number of aerodynamic losses in turbines, but the leakage loss mechanisms have not been fully elucidated yet. This paper computationally investigates the effects of tip injection on tip leakage vortex dynamics in an unshrouded turbine, in an attempt to seek new loss generation mechanisms in turbine tip clearance ...

Basic Analysis of Tip Leakage Mixing Loss
Volume 6: Turbo Expo 2007, Parts A and B, 2007A simple model for tip leakage mixing loss of unshrouded blades for compressible flow is presented. The work draws ideas, is based on the theoretical analysis of the loss by Denton. Relationship for computing the loss is derived, in terms of blade surface static pressure, chordwise distribution of tip clearance, discharge coefficient and total pressure

Tip Leakage Flow: Advanced Measurements and Analysis
22nd AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference, 2016Advanced measurements of a tip clearance flow are carried out in the large subsonic anechoic wind tunnel of the LMFA in Lyon. The experimental set-up is obtained by placing the airfoil between two plates into the potential core of a turbulent rectangular jet, the upper plate being the hub and the lower the casing.

Tip Leakage Flow Instability in a Centrifugal Compressor
Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2019Abstract In this paper, an unsteady tip leakage flow phenomenon is identified and investigated in a centrifugal compressor with a vaneless diffuser at near-stall conditions. This phenomenon is associated with the inception of a rotating instability in the compressor.

Tip Leakage and Backflow Vortex Cavitation
2007In addition to blade surface cavitation, tip leakage and backflow cavitations occur in real inducers. Although most of cavitation instabilities can be explained by considering only blade surface cavitation, these types of cavitation might play an important role especially for the suppression of instabilities.
