Energy Performance and Flow Patterns of a Mixed-Flow Pump with Different Tip Clearance Sizes

open access: yesEnergies, 2017
Tip clearance between blade end and shroud is inevitable in pump operation and of great importance on pump energy performance and pressure fluctuation. As the tip clearance size increases, the head and efficiency of the mixed flow pump drop accordingly ...

Oscillatory Tip Leakage Flows and Stability Enhancement in Axial Compressors

open access: yesInternational Journal of Rotating Machinery, 2018
Rotating stall axial compressor is a difficult research field full of controversy. Over the recent decades, the unsteady tip leakage flows had been discovered and confirmed by several research groups independently.

A novel approach for suppressing leakage flow through turbine blade tip gaps

open access: yesPropulsion and Power Research, 2022
Tip clearance leakage flow of the turbine bade is an important factor limiting the augment of the high pressure turbine efficiency, which should be suppressed utilizing certain methods.

On the modification of tip leakage noise sources by over-tip liners [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics of Fluids
Over-Tip-Rotor (OTR) liners have been investigated over the last decades as a technology to further reduce fan broadband noise in turbofan engines. The suppression of noise with OTR liners is attributed to conventional attenuation of acoustic waves and source modification effects.

Effects of tip-gap size on the tip-leakage flow in a turbomachinery cascade [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics of Fluids, 2006
The effects of tip-gap size on the tip-leakage vortical structures and velocity and pressure fields are investigated using large-eddy simulation, with the objective of providing guidelines for controlling tip-leakage cavitation and viscous losses associated with the tip-leakage flow.

The effect of tip clearance size on pre-stall flow features of a transonic axial compressor by using throttle model

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2023
This paper aims at the numerical analysis of the influence of tip clearance size on the pre-stall flow features of a transonic high-speed compressor by applying the throttle model at the exit of the compressor computational domain.

Shock Formation in Overexpanded Tip Leakage Flow [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 1: Turbomachinery, 1992
Shock formation due to overexpansion of supersonic flow at the inlet to the tip clearance gap of a turbomachine has been studied. The flow was modelled on a water table using a sharp-edged rectangular channel. The flow exhibited an oblique hydraulic jump starting on the channel sidewall near the channel entrance.

Control of Tip Leakage in a High-Pressure Turbine Cascade Using Tip Blowing [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Turbomachinery, 2016
Blowing from the tip of a turbine blade was studied experimentally to determine if total pressure loss could be reduced. Experiments were done with a linear cascade in a low-speed wind tunnel. Total pressure drop through the blade row and secondary velocity fields in the passage between two blades were measured.

Tip Leakage Flow in a Linear Turbine Cascade [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Turbomachinery, 1988
An experimental and analytical study of flow in the tip clearance gap of a linear turbine rotor blade cascade has been performed. Measurements of wall static pressures and flow velocities are used to verify a flow model involving a vena contracta, near the tip gap entrance, followed by flow mixing to fill the gap. A frequently referenced potential flow

Influences of tip leakage flows on flow field at design condition in transonic centrifugal compressor with splitter blade

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2016
A tip leakage flow is well known to have predominant influence on a loss generation in a compressor. An impeller for a transonic centrifugal compressor is generally composed of the main and the splitter blades to gain the choke flow rate.
