Detached Eddy Simulation: Recent Development and Application to Compressor Tip Leakage Flow

Volume 2C: Turbomachinery — Design Methods and CFD Modeling for Turbomachinery; Ducts, Noise, and Component Interactions, 2021
Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) and its variants are emerging tools for turbomachinery simulations. In this paper, the state-of-the-art upgrades of DES are reviewed, and their capabilities in predicting compressor tip leakage flow are discussed.

Tip Leakage Flow: Advanced Measurements and Analysis

22nd AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference, 2016
Advanced measurements of a tip clearance flow are carried out in the large subsonic anechoic wind tunnel of the LMFA in Lyon. The experimental set-up is obtained by placing the airfoil between two plates into the potential core of a turbulent rectangular jet, the upper plate being the hub and the lower the casing.

Numerical simulation on hydraulic performance and tip leakage vortex of a slanted axial-flow pump with different blade angles

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2021
The blade angle has a great effect on hydraulic performance and internal flow field for axial-flow pumps. This research investigated the effect of the blade angle on hydraulic performance and tip leakage vortex (TLV) of a slanted axial-flow pump.

Rotor-Tip Leakage: Part I—Basic Methodology

Journal of Engineering for Power, 1982
Blade tip losses represent a major efficiency penalty in a turbine rotor. These losses are presently controlled by maintaining close tolerances on tip clearances. This two-part paper outlines a new methodology for predicting and minimizing tip leakage flows.

Suppressing tip-leakage vortex cavitation by overhanging grooves

Experiments in Fluids, 2020
In the present paper, a new control method for tip-leakage vortex (TLV) cavitation is proposed. This method, which combines the effects of grooves and winglets, is made of overhanging grooves (OHGs) fitted at the tip of a hydrofoil. Experimental and numerical investigations are conducted to evaluate the performances of OHGs in terms of TLV cavitation ...

Tip Leakage Losses in Subsonic and Transonic Blade-Rows

Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2011
In this paper the effect of blade-exit Mach number on unshrouded turbine tip-leakage flows is investigated. Previously published experimental data of a high-pressure turbine blade are used to validate a CFD code, which is then used to study the tip-leakage flow at blade-exit Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.4.

Numerical Study of Tip Leakage Vortex Around a NACA0009 Hydrofoil

, 2021
In the tip clearance flow, the dominant vortex is the tip leakage vortex (TLV), which has a significant impact on the hydraulic and cavitation performance of axial flow machineries.

Control of Tip Leakage Vortex Breakdown by Tip Injection in Unshrouded Turbines

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2014
Tip leakage flow is responsible for a number of aerodynamic losses in turbines, but the leakage loss mechanisms have not been fully elucidated yet. This paper computationally investigates the effects of tip injection on tip leakage vortex dynamics in an unshrouded turbine, in an attempt to seek new loss generation mechanisms in turbine tip clearance ...

Tip Gap Effects on the Unsteady Behavior of a Tip Leakage Vortex

AIAA Journal, 2007
The effects of tip gap on the unsteady behavior of a tip leakage vortex downstream of an idealized axial compressor rotor blade have been investigated in a linear cascade wind tunnel, extending the study of Ma and Devenport. The wind tunnel features a moving end wall to simulate the relative motion between the rotor and casing, and vortex generator ...

Tip Leakage and Backflow Vortex Cavitation

2007
In addition to blade surface cavitation, tip leakage and backflow cavitations occur in real inducers. Although most of cavitation instabilities can be explained by considering only blade surface cavitation, these types of cavitation might play an important role especially for the suppression of instabilities.
