Reduction of Turbine Blade Tip Leakage Losses and Excitation Forces by Passive Tip Injection

Volume 1: Advances in Aerospace Technology, 2015
The reduction of turbine blade-tip losses by means of passive tip injection was theoretically investigated. The analysis employed an analytical expression of the blade-tip discharge coefficient. The resulting blade-tip excitation forces (i. e. Thomas-Alford forces) were explicitly evaluated for unshrouded turbines with and without passive tip injection.

Tip Leakage in Small Radial Turbines: Optimum Tip-Gap and Efficiency Loss Correlations

Volume 5: Industrial and Cogeneration; Microturbines and Small Turbomachinery; Oil and Gas Applications; Wind Turbine Technology, 2010
The tip-leakage flow mechanisms in turbocharger turbines used for downsized internal combustion engines and the associated losses are investigated over a range of operating conditions. Experiments are performed on a small, 35 mm diameter turbocharger turbine with varying tip-gap heights in a turbocharger test facility and numerical simulations are ...

Analysis of the relationship between turbulence characteristics and loss mechanism in the tip leakage flow of turbine blade

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy, 2021
The tip leakage flow passed over the tip clearance makes the flow very complicated near the tip gap, and the interaction of the tip leakage vortex and endwall vortex enhances the instability of the flow. Accurately capturing detailed flow structures and investigating the relationship between the flow structures and loss are beneficial for understanding

Optimization of Rotor Tip Cavity Shapes for Mitigating Aerodynamic Tip Leakage Losses

Journal of Propulsion and Power
Rotor blade tip leakage loss influences turbine stage efficiency. A parametric optimization method based on five design variables combined with Non-Linear Programming by Quadratic Lagrangian to optimize the turbine efficiency estimated from computational fluid dynamics analysis has been used to obtain estimates of the optimal cavity depth and split ...

Effects of blade rotation on axial turbine tip leakage vortex breakdown and loss

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2016
The tip leakage vortex breakdown occurs under a few conditions in modern turbines, which leads to extra vortex breakdown losses, but the mechanisms of vortex breakdown and its influencing factors still remain unclear. This paper is a continuation of the previous effort and focuses on the effect of blade rotation on the leakage vortex dynamics in an ...

Blade Tip Leakage Loss Reduction by Means of Passive Tip Injection: Linear Cascade Wind Tunnel Results

Volume 2A: Turbomachinery, 2017
In the open literature, an innovative concept for turbine blade tip leakage loss reduction by means of passive tip injection was recently proposed. The present paper presents experimental results obtained for an unshrouded turbine blade corresponding to a 50 % reaction stage.

The Reduction of Over Tip Leakage Loss in Unshrouded Axial Turbines Using Winglets and Squealers

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2007
The possibilities of reducing the over tip leakage loss of unshrouded rotors have been investigated using a linear cascade of turbine blades and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The large-scale blade profile is the same as that of the tip profile of a low-speed high-pressure research turbine facility.

The Effect of the Casing Movement Relative to the Blades on the Tip Leakage Loss in Axial Flow Compressors

Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2011
This paper investigates the effect of the casing movement relative to the blades on the tip leakage loss generation mechanisms by using experimental results from a linear cascade test facility, and viscous numerical results. Traverse measurements in the pitch-wise and span-wise directions are made using a five-hole Pitot tube at the inlet and exit ...

Flow Mechanism and Loss Analysis of Tip Leakage Flow With Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation

Volume 2A: Turbomachinery, 2019
Abstract The complex leakage flow structure in the tip region of unshrouded rotor is a main source of turbine aerodynamic loss. Due to the complex turbulence characteristics of the tip leakage flow, the widely used Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach may fail to accurately predict the multi-scale turbulent flow and the ...

Tip leakage losses in a linear turbine cascade

2021
An investigation of tip leakage flow and its effects on loss production was performed on a large-scale linear turbine cascade having a tip gap measuring 2.1% of the blade height. The Reynolds number based on axial chord and cascade exit velocity was 4.5x10⁵.
