Effects of Squealer Geometry of Turbine Blade Tip on the Tip-Leakage Flow and Loss

Journal of Thermal Science, 2021
The effective control of the tip-leakage flow and loss is of great significance to improve the aerodynamic performance of the turbine. In this paper, the evolution mechanism of tip-leakage flow in a transonic high pressure turbine with a squealer tip is investigated with numerical simulation methods.

Basic Analysis of Tip Leakage Mixing Loss

Volume 6: Turbo Expo 2007, Parts A and B, 2007
A simple model for tip leakage mixing loss of unshrouded blades for compressible flow is presented. The work draws ideas, is based on the theoretical analysis of the loss by Denton. Relationship for computing the loss is derived, in terms of blade surface static pressure, chordwise distribution of tip clearance, discharge coefficient and total pressure

Tip Leakage Losses in Subsonic and Transonic Blade-Rows

Volume 7: Turbomachinery, Parts A, B, and C, 2011
In this paper the effect of blade-exit Mach number on unshrouded turbine tip-leakage flows is investigated. Previously published experimental data of a high-pressure turbine blade are used to validate a CFD code, which is then used to study the tip-leakage flow at blade-exit Mach numbers from 0.6 to 1.4.

Axial Turbine Tip-Leakage Losses at Off-Design Incidences

Volume 5: Turbo Expo 2004, Parts A and B, 2004
The tip-leakage losses in axial turbines with unshrouded rotor blades can account for as much as one third of the total losses. Various effects are influencing the tip-leakage flow and losses. This paper presents results of an experimental investigation concerning off-design incidences.

Winglet geometry effects on tip leakage loss over the plane tip in a turbine cascade

Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2018
The effects of winglet offset distance, winglet coverage, and winglet cross section on the over-tip leakage loss for the plane tip have been investigated experimentally in a turbine blade cascade for a tip gap height-to-span ratio of h/s = 1.36 %. The results show that the over-tip leakage loss for the full coverage winglet increases steeply with ...

Improvement of Tip Leakage Loss Model for Axial Turbines

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1997
Tip leakage has a significant effect on the aerodynamic and thermal performance of gas turbines. Losses from the leakage flow often account for as much as one third of the total loss through a turbine stage. Among the recent experimental studies, Bindon (1989) measured the flow field in the tip gap and the subsequent mixing region in a linear cascade ...

Tip Leakage in Small Radial Turbines: Optimum Tip-Gap and Efficiency Loss Correlations

Volume 5: Industrial and Cogeneration; Microturbines and Small Turbomachinery; Oil and Gas Applications; Wind Turbine Technology, 2010
The tip-leakage flow mechanisms in turbocharger turbines used for downsized internal combustion engines and the associated losses are investigated over a range of operating conditions. Experiments are performed on a small, 35 mm diameter turbocharger turbine with varying tip-gap heights in a turbocharger test facility and numerical simulations are ...

Reduction of Turbine Blade Tip Leakage Losses and Excitation Forces by Passive Tip Injection

Volume 1: Advances in Aerospace Technology, 2015
The reduction of turbine blade-tip losses by means of passive tip injection was theoretically investigated. The analysis employed an analytical expression of the blade-tip discharge coefficient. The resulting blade-tip excitation forces (i. e. Thomas-Alford forces) were explicitly evaluated for unshrouded turbines with and without passive tip injection.
