Tip leakage losses in a linear turbine cascade

2021
An investigation of tip leakage flow and its effects on loss production was performed on a large-scale linear turbine cascade having a tip gap measuring 2.1% of the blade height. The Reynolds number based on axial chord and cascade exit velocity was 4.5x10⁵.

The Reduction of Over Tip Leakage Loss in Unshrouded Axial Turbines Using Winglets and Squealers

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2007
The possibilities of reducing the over tip leakage loss of unshrouded rotors have been investigated using a linear cascade of turbine blades and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The large-scale blade profile is the same as that of the tip profile of a low-speed high-pressure research turbine facility.

The Development and Applications of a Loading Distribution Based Tip Leakage Loss Model for Unshrouded Gas Turbines

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2020
Abstract The prediction of tip leakage flow aerothermal loss plays a crucial role in turbine preliminary design, which strongly affects the turbine performance. A new tip leakage loss model for unshrouded turbine is developed in this paper, considering the compressible flow aerothermal process inside the clearance.

The Physical Mechanism of Tip Leakage Loss Reduction by Means of Passive Injection in Low Mach Number Flows

Volume 8: Microturbines, Turbochargers, and Small Turbomachines; Steam Turbines, 2018
Tip clearance losses represent a major source of efficiency losses in turbomachinery. A novel method based on passive injection for reducing tip leakage losses in axial turbine cascades has been proposed in 2007 by Willinger and co-workers, and first experimental demonstrations of the potential of this approach were reported recently.

Development of a tip leakage loss model for high-pressure turbines with squealer tips based on physics-driven and data-driven methods

Physics of Fluids
Tip leakage loss significantly influences aerodynamic performance of high-pressure turbines, with squealer tips serving as an effective control strategy. The development of a tip leakage loss model is crucial for evaluating and predicting turbine aerodynamic performance and guiding blade tip design.

Numerical Investigation on Mechanism and Modeling of Tip Leakage Flow Loss in Partially Shrouded Axial Flow Fans

Volume 12A: Turbomachinery — Axial Flow Fan and Compressor Aerodynamics
Abstract The Partially Shrouded Axial-Flow Fan (PSAFF), extensively used in air conditioning and various industrial settings, exhibits a unique design wherein the shroud encompasses only a portion of the blade tips. However, there is a research gap in comprehending the tip leakage flow (TLF) behavior and developing more accurate loss ...
