Experimental study of two low tip-speed ratio micro-scale wind turbines operating in tandem

open access: yesJournal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This paper presents a parametric experimental study of a dual-rotor wind turbine system operating at low tip-speed ratios of the order of 1. The flow-field in the wake of such a multibladed-high solidity micro-scale wind turbine is measured and characterized at distances up to 15Rt, with Rt=70 mm being the tip radius of the turbine.

The effect of circumferential distortion on fan performance at two levels of blade loading [PDF]

open access: yes
Single stage fans designed for two levels of pressure ratio or blade loading were subjected to screen-induced circumferential distortions of 90-degree extent.

Positive‐Tone Nanolithography of Antimony Trisulfide with Femtosecond Laser Wet‐Etching

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A butyldithiocarbamic acid (BDCA) etchant is used to fabricate various micro‐ and nanoscale structures on amorphous antimony trisulfide (a‐Sb2S3) thin film via femtosecond laser etching. Numerical analysis and experimental results elucidate the patterning mechanism on gold (reflective) and quartz (transmissive) substrates.

Study the effect of using a dual rotor system on the performance of horizontal axis wind turbines using CFD

open access: yesGlobal Energy Interconnection
This research aims to improve the power output of a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) by using an auxiliary rotor in front of the main rotor, this configuration is called a dual-rotor wind turbine (DRWT). The three-bladed main rotor has a diameter of 0.

Brief communication: Real-time estimation of the optimal tip-speed ratio for controlling wind turbines with degraded blades [PDF]

open access: yesWind Energy Science
Rotor performance is adversely affected by the wear and tear of blade surfaces caused, for example, by rain, snow, icing, dirt, bugs and aging. Blade surface degradation changes the aerodynamic properties of the rotor, which in turn changes the optimal ...

On‐Surface Indigo‐Based Bimolecular Coordination Networks with Programmable Regular or Vitreous Structure

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A previously unreported coordination motif stabilising single Fe atoms by indigo chelation and pyridyl coordination on Au(111) has been revealed. By using planar tritopic pyridyl linkers (TPyB), extended 2D porous networks of indigo3(TPyB)2Fe6 form. These networks can be crystalline or vitreous and offer an environment where individual coordination ...

Aerodynamic performance of a 1.35-pressure-ratio axial-flow fan stage [PDF]

open access: yes
The overall blade element performances and the aerodynamic design parameters are presented for a 1.35-pressure-ratio fan stage. The fan stage was designed for a weight flow of 32.7 kilograms per second and a tip speed of 302.8 meters per second.

Application of Richardson extrapolation method to the CFD simulation of vertical-axis wind turbines and analysis of the flow field

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics, 2019
There is still discrepancy regarding the verification of CFD U-RANS simulations of vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs). In this work, the applicability of the Richardson extrapolation method to assess mesh convergence is studied for several points in the

Design of a Horizontal Axis Tidal Turbine for Less Energetic Current Velocity Profiles

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2019
Existing installations of tidal-stream turbines are undertaken in energetic sites with flow speeds greater than 2 m/s. Sites with lower velocities will produce far less power and may not be as economically viable when using “conventional” ...
