Free‐living Black‐tailed Godwits maintain constant intake rates across varying grassland habitat conditions by adjusting their foraging behaviour

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
Free‐living birds need to acquire enough food to fulfil their energetic needs, which may require more effort in habitats with less favourable conditions. Therefore, to maintain their necessary energy intake, birds need to adjust their foraging behaviour in response to varying habitat conditions.

Fly me to the canopy: Diptera communities in oak forest crowns as bioindicators of stand decline

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Diptera diversity: Oak decline increases the overall Diptera diversity, particularly in saproxylic and floricolous guilds, likely due to more open canopies and greater deadwood and floral resource availability. Family responses: Dolichopodidae, Empididae, Hybotidae and Anthomyiidae thrive in declining stands, whereas Mycetophilidae and other fungus ...

Investigation of the global transportation of Culicoides biting midges, vectors of livestock and equid arboviruses, from flower‐packing plants in Kenya

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 40, Issue 2, Page 260-267, June 2026.
Arboviral diseases spread by Culicoides biting midges have been introduced into Europe by unknown means. A possible route is the carriage of midges with cut flowers shipped to flower markets. We sampled Culicoides in and around a cut flower farm in Kenya; midges were caught in the vicinity and a greenhouse, but not where flowers are processed.

Successes, challenges and insights from integration of testing of management interventions in conservation practice

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 4, April 2026.
Tests of conservation interventions, and especially long‐term experiments, are most likely to succeed when there is a broad partnership commitment to evidence‐based approaches amongst practitioners and funders, as well as scientists. A track record of implementing such studies has undoubtedly helped to build organisational capability in evidence‐based ...
