The neural crest‐associated gene ERRFI1 is involved in melanoma progression and resistance toward targeted therapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
ERRFI1, a neural crest (NC)‐associated gene, was upregulated in melanoma and negatively correlated with the expression of melanocytic differentiation markers and the susceptibility of melanoma cells toward BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Knocking down ERRFI1 significantly increased the sensitivity of melanoma cells to BRAFi.

Synthesis and characterization of ultra-soft alginate hydrogel mimicking lung tissue

open access: yesInternational Journal of Smart and Nano Materials
Alginate hydrogels possess properties analogous to those of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Thus, their mechanical behavior approximates soft tissue, which makes them desirable for the production of tissue-equivalent soft deformable structures.

Accuracy of cone beam computed tomography in measuring thicknesses of hard-tissue-mimicking material adjacent to different implant thread surfaces

open access: yesJournal of Dental Sciences, 2019
Background/purpose: To evaluate the measurement accuracy of hard-tissue thicknesses adjacent to dental implants with different thread designs on images obtained from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) using an in vitro model.

Applications of Engineering Techniques in Microvasculature Design

open access: yesFrontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, 2021
Achieving successful microcirculation in tissue engineered constructs in vitro and in vivo remains a challenge. Engineered tissue must be vascularized in vitro for successful inosculation post-implantation to allow instantaneous perfusion.

Plecstatin inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenesis and invasion through cytolinker plectin

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The ruthenium‐based metallodrug plecstatin exerts its anticancer effect in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) primarily through selective targeting of plectin. By disrupting plectin‐mediated cytoskeletal organization, plecstatin inhibits anchorage‐dependent growth, cell polarization, and tumor cell dissemination.

Infrared laser sampling of low volumes combined with shotgun lipidomics reveals lipid markers in palatine tonsil carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) low‐volume sampling combined with shotgun lipidomics uncovers distinct lipidome alterations in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) of the palatine tonsil. Several lipid species consistently differentiate tumor from healthy tissue, highlighting their potential as diagnostic markers.

Development of a measurement setup to determine the frictional properties of tissuemimicking materials for vascular models

open access: yesCurrent Directions in Biomedical Engineering
In this study, a measurement setup was developed to determine the frictional properties between tissue-mimicking and implant materials. Nitinol and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were selected as implant materials, while Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel ...

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve
