The on‐ground feasibility of a waterless barrier to stop the spread of invasive cane toads in Western Australia

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, 2019
Modeling suggests that excluding invasive cane toads from artificial water points (e.g., pastoral dams) along an arid coastal corridor in Western Australia would create a “waterless barrier” halting their spread.

Laid-back invaders: Cane toads (Rhinella marina) down-regulate their stress responses as they colonize a harsh climate

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2020
In response to encountering abiotic extremes, many organisms exhibit stress responses as measured by levels of corticosterone and heat-shock protein (e.g., HSP70) in the blood. Such responses can enhance organismal viability.

Decreased cold‐sensing function of the transient receptor potential channel TRPM8 from tailed amphibians

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Despite frogs avoiding low temperatures, examination of four salamander species revealed that none avoided cold and all possessed cold tolerance. Functional analysis of TRPM8, a cold sensor, showed that all salamander TRPM8s had lost their cold sensitivity.

Frog Swarms: Earthquake Precursors or False Alarms?

open access: yesAnimals, 2013
In short-term earthquake risk forecasting, the avoidance of false alarms is of utmost importance to preclude the possibility of unnecessary panic among populations in seismic hazard areas.

THE TAXONOMIC STATUS OF THE WYOMING TOAD, BUFO BAXTERI PORTER [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The population of toads in southeastern Wyoming named Bufo hemiophrys baxteri by Porter in 1968 is presumed to be extinct in nature, except perhaps for released, captive-bred specimens.

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Re-introduction of the Mallorcan midwife toad, Mallorca, Spain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The Mallorcan midwife toad (Alytes muletensis, Sanchíz & Alcover, 1977) or ferreret was first described in the 1970s as Baleaphryne muletensis from upper Pleistocene fossils, and was considered extinct.
