First SOLPS‐ITER Simulation Study of Japanese DEMO on Leakage of Seeded Ar Impurity

open access: yesContributions to Plasma Physics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT For JA DEMO, one of the grand challenges is efficiently handling the extreme power loads onto plasma‐facing components, particularly the divertor targets. Impurity seeding is an essential strategy for increasing the radiation losses and thereby reducing the heat load on the targets.

Cross-tokamak disruption prediction based on domain adaptation

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
The high acquisition cost and the significant demand for disruptive discharges for data-driven disruption prediction models in future tokamaks pose an inherent contradiction in disruption prediction research.

Divertor design for the tokamak physics experiment [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Nuclear Materials, 1995
In this paper we discuss the present divertor design for the planned TPX tokamak, which will explore the physics and technology of steady-state (1000s pulses) heat and particle removal in high confinement (2--4{times} L-mode), high beta ({beta}{sub N} {ge} 3) divertor plasmas sustained by non-inductive current drive.

In Situ Sintering Studies of Reactive Sintered Borides (RSB) Neutron Shielding Materials

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Reactive sintered borides (RSBs) are a family of radiation‐dense materials made by powder metal processing and sintering of elemental precursors. Recent interest in RSBs has focused on their properties as high‐flux low‐activation thermal neutron absorbers for nuclear applications including fusion reactors.

Fluctuating Interfaces in Barotropic Beta‐Plane Turbulence

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 9, 16 May 2026.
Abstract Zonal jets manifest themselves as bands with sharp interfaces in the vorticity configuration. We develop an algorithm to track these fluctuating vorticity interfaces and systematically investigate their characteristic spatio‐temporal behaviors.

The design of the Tokamak Physics Experiment (TPX) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fusion Energy, 1993
The Tokamak Physics Experiment is designed to develop the scientific basis for a compact and continuously operating tokamak fusion reactor. It is based on an emerging class of tokamak operating modes, characterized by beta limits well in excess of the Troyon limit, confinement scaling well in excess of H-mode, and bootstrap current fractions ...

Auroral Signatures of Ballooning Instability and Plasmoid Formation Processes in the Near‐Earth Magnetotail

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, Volume 131, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract The nonlinear development of ballooning instability and the subsequently induced plasmoid formation in the near‐Earth magnetotail demonstrated in MHD simulations has been proposed as a potential trigger mechanism for substorm onset over the past decade, and their connections to the in situ satellite and ground all‐sky auroral optical ...

Auxiliary heating and current drive physics for the ST-E1 fusion power plant

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
This work describes the physics basis for the proposed auxiliary heating and current drive system on the ST-E1 fusion power plant. The ST-E1 flattop plasma considered here is fully non-inductive with a bootstrap fraction of 0.9 and the remaining current ...

Data readiness pipeline patterns for scientific AI at scale: Insights from climate, fusion, life sciences, and materials

open access: yesAI Magazine, Volume 47, Issue 1, Spring 2026.
Abstract This article examines how data readiness for AI principles apply to large scientific datasets used to train foundation models. We analyze archetypal workflows across four representative domains—climate, nuclear fusion, life sciences, and materials—to identify common preprocessing patterns and domain‐specific constraints.

Time series extrinsic regression for reconstructing missing electron temperature in tokamak

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
The integrity of tokamak plasma diagnostic data is critical for physics research and the development of experimental fusion device. Sensor failures, data acquisition errors, or limitations in diagnostic systems (e.g.
