Genome-scale metabolic modelling of extremophiles and its applications in astrobiological environments. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep
Metabolic modelling with GEMs is a valuable tool for studying extremophiles and simulating genetic and environmental changes. Integration with other mathematical approaches aids in predicting life forms in astroenvironments, informing the origins of life and space adaptation.

Assessment on the efficacy of methods 2 to 5 and method 7 set out in Commission Regulation (EU) No 142/2011 to inactivate relevant pathogens when producing processed animal protein of porcine origin intended to feed poultry and aquaculture animals

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 21, Issue 7, July 2023., 2023
Abstract An assessment was conducted on the level of inactivation of relevant pathogens that could be present in processed animal protein of porcine origin intended to feed poultry and aquaculture animals when methods 2 to 5 and method 7, as detailed in Regulation (EU) No 142/2011, are applied.

Isolation and Characterization of Lactobacillus crispatus, Lactococcus lactis, and Carnobacterium divergens as Potential Probiotic Bacteria from Fermented Black and Green Olives (Olea europaea): An Exploratory Study

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Background. Table olives are becoming well recognized as a source of probiotic bacteria that might be used to create a health‐promoting fermented food product by traditional procedures based on the activities of indigenous microbial consortia present in local environments. Methodology.

Mapping literature reviews on coral health: Protocol for a review map, critical appraisal and bibliometric analysis

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 3, Issue 4, October–December 2022., 2022
Here, we present a protocol for conducting a second‐order synthesis to better understand the state of coral health literature. As primary studies of coral reefs accumulated, researchers began to compile these studies into first‐order syntheses, and these first‐order syntheses have now accumulated as well.

Oral immunotherapy for Immunoglobulin E‐mediated cow's milk allergy in children: A systematic review and meta analysis

open access: yesImmunity, Inflammation and Disease, Volume 10, Issue 10, October 2022., 2022
We conduct a latest meta‐analysis; the analyses show that oral immunotherapy (OIT) is effective for immunoglobulin E‐mediated cow's milk allergy in children, especially in patients older than 3 years. OIT can cause adverse actions but most are mild‐to‐moderate.

Native for whom: A mixed‐methods literature review and synthesis to conceptualise biotic nativeness for social research in the urban context

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 4, Issue 1, Page 15-31, February 2022., 2022
Abstract The idea of which species are native, based on their biogeographic origin, is central to many policies and programmes. Yet definitions are contested and the meanings of ‘nativeness’ are often complex and confusing for many people. For example, a plant that would be considered 'native' in Australia might have a native bioregion that is ...

The Microbiome of the Seaweed Cultivar Ulva compressa (Chlorophyta) and Its Persistence Under Micropollutant Exposure. [PDF]

open access: yesEnviron Microbiol Rep
Despite reduced bacterial diversity due to cultivation and subsequent micropollutant treatment, key bacterial functions are retained, promoting macroalgal growth and morphogenesis. ABSTRACT The green macroalga Ulva demonstrates exceptional growth rates, robustness, adaptability and potential for nitrogen and phosphorus removal; thus, it is a promising ...

Evaluation of the use of psychometric scales in human–wildlife interaction research to determine attitudes and tolerance toward wildlife

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 2, Page 533-547, April 2021., 2021
Abstract Studies evaluating human–wildlife interactions (HWIs) in a conservation context often include psychometric scales to measure attitudes and tolerance toward wildlife. However, data quality is at risk when such scales are used without appropriate validation or reliability testing, potentially leading to erroneous interpretation or application of
