Lateralization and Detection of a Tonal Signal in Noise
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1969The ability to lateralize a tonal signal against a white-noise background was investigated by presenting that signal at different intensities to the two ears. The signal (500 cps, 250 msec) was gated on every trial during the single observation interval. The more intense signal was equally likely to be presented to the left ear as to the right, and the

Acoustical barrier for tonal noises
Applied Acoustics, 2005In this paper, a novel acoustical barrier based on the principle of the Helmholtz resonator is proposed for the mitigation of tonal noises and its in situ performance has been assessed in comparison with a reflecting barrier and an absorbent barrier.

Psychoacoustically based tonality model for the evaluation of noise with tonal components
Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2015For many years in various product assessments, tonality measurement procedures have been applied to identify and quantify prominent tonal components. The perception and evaluation of sound events containing such components has become increasingly important, e.g., in the field of vehicle acoustics for the assessment of tonality due to alternative drives,

Human responses to the tonalness of aircraft noise
Noise Control Engineering Journal, 2010A study was conducted to examine the influence of changes in tonalness on annoyance ratings of aircraft noise. Stimuli used in this study were simulated using a program in which aircraft noise was decomposed into noise and tonal components. From these base components, additional aircraft sounds were created by varying the amplitude of the tonal ...

Numerical investigation of marine diesel engine turbocharger compressor tonal noise
Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part D, journal of automobile engineering, 2020The compressor tonal noise of a low-speed marine diesel engine turbocharger is investigated with numerical method. Nine operating conditions on four different rotating speed lines are analyzed; the conditions include near-choke conditions, near-surge ...

A secondary modulation mechanism for aerofoil tonal self-noise generation
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2022Acoustic emission of a NACA 0012 aerofoil is investigated over a range of free-stream velocities. Acoustic spectra show a dominant tone and two sets of weaker side tones characterised by different frequency intervals.

Tonal noise sensitivity in hard drives
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2013High levels of noise have been found to cause offline events and data loss in information technology equipment in multiple data centers. Studies by this author and others showed these events were a result interaction between rotational storage media or hard drives (HDD) and air-borne noise.
