Ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie, is a congenital malformation, in which a short, lingual frenulum or a tight genioglossus muscle restricts tongue movement. In newborns, the reported prevalence is 2-11%. However, only 18% of newborns, in whom clinical findings suggest ankyloglossia, develop symptoms.
