A digital tongue imaging system for tongue coating evaluation in patients with oral malodour

Oral Diseases, 2009
Objective:  Several simple visual methods have been developed for assessing tongue coating, but it is difficult to eliminate biases associated with these. The digital tongue imaging system (DTIS) was designed to acquire tongue surface images using a digital camera under controlled conditions, and to calculate tongue coating area.

Tongue biofilm areal density and tongue coating index

Journal of Breath Research, 2008
Two methods have been employed to measure the amount of tongue biofilm in humans: (1) areal density of microbes (cfu cm(-2)) (tongue scrape from a known/measured area), or (2) a tongue-coating index, where a human judge assesses the amount of 'coating' by visual inspection.

COATED TONGUE TREATMENT USING TONGUE SCRAPER ALL OVER THE SURFACE OF TONGUE DORSUM

Journal of Health and Dental Sciences, 2022
A coated tongue is characterized by a white, yellowish-brown, or blackish-coloured coating on the tongue's surface. Coated tongues are formed from debris consisting of bacteria on the dorsal surface of the tongue, a large number of desquamated epithelial cells derived from the oral mucosa, leukocytes from periodontal pockets, and blood metabolites, and

Coated Tongue Region Extraction using the Fluorescence Response of the Tongue Coating by Ultraviolet Light Source

The Journal of the Institute of Webcasting, Internet and Telecommunication, 2012
An effective extraction method for extracting a coated tongue is proposed in this paper, which is used as the diagnostic criteria in the tongue diagnosis. Proposed method uses the fluorescence response characteristics of the coated tongue that is occurred by using the ultraviolet light.

A Novel Approach of Tongue Body and Tongue Coating Separation Based on FCM

2008 2nd International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering, 2008
Tongue inspection is not only main content of four diagnostic methods "observation, auscultation and olfaction, interrogation, palpation" for TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), but also one of most important characteristics of TCM diagnostic methods. Traditional tongue inspection mainly depends on doctor's eyesight to diagnose a disease.

Tongue-Coating Microbial and Metabolic Characteristics in Halitosis

Journal of Dental Research
Halitosis is a common oral condition, which leads to social embarrassment and affects quality of life. Cumulative evidence has suggested the association of tongue-coating microbiome with the development of intraoral halitosis. The dynamic variations of tongue-coating microbiota and metabolites in halitosis have not been fully elucidated. Therefore, the

Effectiveness of mechanical tongue cleaning on breath odour and tongue coating

International Journal of Dental Hygiene, 2010
Background: The objective of this review was to summarize the available evidence regarding the effects of mechanical tongue cleaning compared with no mechanical tongue cleaning on breath odour and tongue coating (TC). Methods: PubMed-MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane-CENTRAL were searched to identify potentially relevant studies.
