Abstract This article analyzes the rebuses (picture riddles) of Anna Nikanorovna Paskhalova‐Mordovtseva. It argues that despite their seemingly modest nature as artefacts of everyday leisure, Mordovtseva used these puzzles to make radical claims and assert herself as a public intellectual.
