The radicular cyst arises from proliferated epithelial cell rests of malassez when they get stimulated by an inflammatory process originating from pulpal necrosis of a nonvital tooth. The associated tooth is usually asymptomatic and may result in swelling of the soft tissues and mobility of the teeth involved.

Capnocytophaga found in root canal system of a nonvital tooth
Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, 1982Abstract An organism previously unreported in the endodontic literature, Capnocytophaga was isolated and identified through the use of a routine culture. An in vitro comparison of nonvital bleaching techniques in the discolored tooth
Journal of Endodontics, 1982In this study, teeth were stained in vitro to compare and evaluate the results of three commonly used nonvital bleaching techniques: the thermocatalytic, the “walking bleach,” and the combination. The three techniques were equally effective in bleaching crowns in which pulpal hemorrhage was the primary cause of discoloration.

Apexification in a Nonvital Tooth by Control of Infection
The Journal of the American Dental Association, 1980Incomplete formation of roots in permanent dentition because of death of the pulps is fairly common. Various pastes are used in apexification procedures. It has been suggested that minimum mechanical intervention and removal of infection alone may be sufficient. A case is reported in which this was observed.

Nonsurgical treatment of extraoral lesions caused by necrotic nonvital tooth
Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, 1986Two cases of extraoral fistula on the chin--caused by necrotic pulp of lower anterior teeth--are being presented. A paste consisting of equal amounts of calcium hydroxide and iodoform mixed with glycerin was used. It is concluded that the positive results of this method of treatment were due to the therapeutic properties of the paste.
