The recent recommendation of the Academy's Committee on Nutrition for a decrease from 0.5 to 0.25 mg/day for children less than 2 years of age was "to reduce the possibility of mild fluorosis."

This relative abrasion scale is determined by weight loss of mechanically brushed specimens (methyl methacrylate) with a slurry from each dentifrice.
