Mesoscopic description of hippocampal replay and metastability in spiking neural networks with short-term plasticity [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Comput Biol 18(12): e1010809 (2022), 2022
Bottom-up models of functionally relevant patterns of neural activity provide an explicit link between neuronal dynamics and computation. A prime example of functional activity pattern is hippocampal replay, which is critical for memory consolidation. The switchings between replay events and a low-activity state in neural recordings suggests metastable

Toward merging bottom–up and top–down model-based designing of synthetic microbial communities

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Microbiology, 2022
The increasing interest of microbial communities as promising biocatalyst is leading an intense effort into the development of computational frameworks assisting the analysis and rational engineering of such complex ecosystems. Here, we critically review the recent computational and model-guided advances in the system-level engineering of microbiome ...

Impact of Stacking-Up and Scaling-Down Bit Cells in 3D NAND on Their Threshold Voltages

open access: yesMicromachines, 2022
Over the past few decades, NAND flash memory has advanced with exponentially-increasing bit growth. As bit cells in 3D NAND flash memory are stacked up and scaled down together, some potential challenges should be investigated.

The Charged Higgs from the Bottom-Up: Probing Flavor at the LHC [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
We systematically study model-independent constraints on the three generic charged Higgs couplings to $b$-quarks and up-type quarks. While existing LHC searches have focussed on the $tb$ coupling, we emphasize that the LHC plays a crucial role in probing also $ub$ and $cb$ couplings, since constraints from flavor physics are weak.

Behavioral modeling of PWL analog circuits using symbolic analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Behavioral models are used both for top-down design and for bottom-up verification. During top-down design, models are created that reflect the nominal behavior of the different analog functions, as well as the constraints imposed by the parasitics.

Conceptualization of Biomimicry in Engineering Context among Undergraduate and High School Students: An International Interdisciplinary Exploration

open access: yesBiomimetics, 2023
Biomimicry is an interdisciplinary design approach that provides solutions to engineering problems by taking inspiration from nature. Given the established importance of biomimicry for building a sustainable world, there is a need to develop effective ...

Bottom-up construction of ontologies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Presents a particular way of building ontologies that proceeds in a bottom-up fashion. Concepts are defined in a way that mirrors the way their instances are composed out of smaller objects.
