Topological Defects and Topological Phase Transitions
2021As was seen in Chap. 8 many bulk states of matter exhibit a, partial or full, orientational and/or translational order. Until now this order has always been considered to be perfect although in practice, many bulk phases exhibit defects, i.e., domains where this order departs from the one originally postulated.

The ordered states which we considered in the preceding chapter are spatially uniform, i.e., the order parameter ψ has the same value everywhere in space. In practice, however, ψ could be a function of r on account of imperfections. Our interest here is in topological defects (like dislocations), that are related intrinsically to symmetry breaking.

We now discuss applications of topology to the classification of defects, or violations of local equilibrium, in condensed media. These applications derive from the fact that, in many important cases, the state of thermodynamic equilibrium is degenerate at temperatures below a certain critical temperature.

Texture: A cosmological topological defect
Physical Review D, 1987The notions of phase transition and causality, combined with the standard cosmological model, lead to the appearance of topological defects in the early Universe. The most familiar types of defects are solitons, strings, and domain walls. Another type---textures---can exist when the spatial universe is compact.
