In this Book Chapter (invited) we briefly review the basic concepts defining topological insulators and focus on elaborating on the key experimental results that revealed and established their symmetry protected (SPT) topological nature. We then present key experimental results that demonstrate magnetism, Kondo insulation, mirror chirality or ...

Mirror-symmetric (001) surfaces of a topological crystalline insulator SnTe host an even number of Dirac cone structures of surface states. A Zeeman field generically gaps the surface states, leading to a 2D topological insulator.

Type-II quadrupole topological insulators
Modern theory of electric polarization is formulated by the Berry phase, which, when quantized, leads to topological phases of matter. Such a formulation has recently been extended to higher electric multipole moments, through the discovery of the so ...

Chiral and helical states in selective-area epitaxial heterostructure
The quasi-1D chiral edge states in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator are dissipationless, while the 2D helical surface states in a topological insulator are insensitive to spin-independent scatterings due to the topological protection.

Intrinsic magnetic topological insulators
Introducing magnetism into topological insulators breaks time-reversal symmetry, and the magnetic exchange interaction can open a gap in the otherwise gapless topological surface states.

Inverse spin Hall effect in heterostructures “nanostructured ferromagnet/topological insulator”
Interaction between magnetization dynamics and spin polarized electronic transport has been studied for ferromagnet nanodisk situated upon a 3D topological insulator (TI) film.

Topological magnon insulator in insulating ferromagnet [PDF]
In the ferromagnetic insulator with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we theoretically predict and numerically verify a topological magnon insulator, where the charge-free magnon is topologically protected to transport along the edge while it is insulating in the bulk.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Studies of Topological Insulators Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy
We summarize our recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study of topological insulator thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), which includes the observation of electron standing waves on topological insulator surface and the Landau ...
