Ustilago hordei Delivers Heterologous Fungal Effectors for Screening and Characterisation in Wheat

Ustilago hordei, a barley pathogen, has been engineered to deliver effectors of fungal pathogens in wheat. Necrosis‐inducing activities of Parastagonospora nodorum effectors SnTOX1 and SnTOX3 can effectively be screened for. Challenges occur when stem rust fungus avirulence effectors are tested in this secretion system.
