On the Analytical Description of the Topside Ionosphere by NeQuick: Modeling the Scale Height Through COSMIC/FORMOSAT-3 Selected Data

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2020
International audienceThe analytical description of the topside ionosphere included in the NeQuick model is studied in detail. First, the modeled scale height behavior is analyzed at infinity and for the lowest part of the topside region; in the latter ...

On the low-latitude NeQuick topside ionosphere mismodelling: The role of parameters H0, g, and r

open access: yesAdvances in Space Research, 2023
This paper deals with the well-known mismodelling characterizing the NeQuick topside ionosphere at low latitudes, i.e., the fact that the model keeps the two electron density humps typical of the equatorial ionization anomaly as the altitude increases ...

Exospheric models of the topside ionosphere

Space Science Reviews, 1974
The historical evolution of the study of escape of light gases from planetary atmospheres is delineated, and the application of kinetic theory to the ionsphere is discussed. Ionospheric plasma becomes collisionless above the ion-exobase which is located near 1000 km altitude in the trough and polar regions, and which coincides with the plasmapause at ...

Comparison of topside ionosphere scale height modeled by the Topside Sounder Model and incoherent scatter radar ionospheric model

Advances in Space Research, 2013
Abstract The topside ionosphere scale height extracted from two empirical models are compared in the paper. The Topside Sounder Model (TSM) provides directly the scale height ( H T ), while the incoherent scatter radar ionospheric model (ISRIM) provides electron density profiles and its scale height ( H R ) is determined by the lowest gradient in ...

A Neural network model of Electron density in Earth’s Topside ionosphere (NET)

2023 XXXVth General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI GASS), 2023
The ionosphere is an ionized part of the upper atmosphere, where the number of free electrons is large enough to affect the propagation of electromagnetic signals, including those of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) systems. Knowing electron density values in the ionosphere is crucial for both industrial and scientific applications. Here,

TITIPy: A Python tool for the calculation and mapping of topside ionosphere turbulence indices

open access: yesComputers and Geosciences, 2021
TITIPy (Topside Ionosphere Turbulence Indices with Python) is a stand-alone Python tool developed for the calculation and mapping of RODI, ROTI, and ROTEI indices, for the characterization of the turbulent state of the topside ionosphere.

Progress in modeling the ionospheric peak and topside electron density

Advances in Space Research, 1987
Recent progress made in modeling the electron density profile in the topside ionosphere is reviewed. The results of different F2 peak models are addressed in the light of the data, and the outlook for further progress in this area is discussed. Efforts made toward determining the topside profile shape are reviewed and assessed.

A global empirical model of the ionospheric topside electron density

Advances in Space Research, 2004
Abstract As it was mentioned in many publications, the Bent model for the topside ionosphere used in IRI is not adequate, especially for the periods of high solar activity. Additional efforts are necessary to improve the empirical presentation of the electron concentration vertical distribution in topside ionosphere.

Validation of the IRI-2020 topside ionosphere options through in-situ electron density observations by low-Earth-orbit satellites [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Space Research
The topside ionosphere extends from the F2-layer peak, where the electron density reaches its absolute maximum in the ionosphere, to the overlying plasmasphere and magnetosphere.

Modeling Electron Density in the Topside of the Ionosphere using Machine Learning

2021 XXXIVth General Assembly and Scientific Symposium of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI GASS), 2021
Modeling the Earth's ionosphere is a critical component of forecasting space weather, which in turn impacts radio wave propagation, navigation and communication. This research focuses specifically on predicting the electron density in the topside of the ionosphere, using data collected from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), a ...
