Tornado Seasonality in Central‐Southern Chile

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Tornado records in Chile show an apparent seasonality with a peak between May and June. We study this seasonality in central‐south and austral Chile by analyzing three indicators of tornado environments: vorticity generation parameter (VGP), storm ...

An Investigation of Thermodynamic Characteristics associated with California Tornadoes and US Landfalling Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes

open access: yes, 2007
Limited tornado research has been conducted across the state of California, especially when looking at the low-level thermodynamics of tornado genesis. In comparison much more research has been undertaken across the United States. This study examines low-

Impact of Storage Temperature and Duration on Dimensional Stability and Mechanical Properties of 3D‐Printed Implant Surgical Guides

open access: yesJournal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective This study aimed to evaluate the impact of storage temperature and duration on the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of 3D‐printed surgical guides. Materials and Methods Sixty surgical guides were designed using two software programs (3Shape and SMOP) and printed with NextDent SG resin.

Tornado Occurrence in the United States as Modulated by Multidecadal Oceanic Oscillations Using Empirical Model Decomposition

open access: yesAtmosphere
Studies have analyzed U.S. tornado variability and correlated F1–F5 tornado occurrence with various natural climate oscillations and anthropogenic factors. Using a relatively new empirical mode decommission (EMD) method that extracts time-frequency modes

Natural disaster risk salience and the strategic appointment of directors with sustainability expertise

open access: yesJournal of Financial Research, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines how salient sustainability risks from near‐miss natural disasters influence board composition. Using a difference‐in‐differences design, I find that firms located in counties neighboring disaster‐affected areas significantly increase the presence of directors with sustainability expertise following the disaster.

Tornadoes and Their Parent Convective Storms

open access: yes, 2017
In the past four decades much has been discovered about tornado formation and structure from observations, laboratory models, and numerical-simulation experiments. Observations include nearby movies and photographs of tornadoes, fixed-site, airborne, and

A Conditional Tail Expectation Type Risk Measure for Time Series

open access: yesJournal of Time Series Analysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We consider the estimation of the conditional expectation 𝔼(Xh|X0>UX(1/p)), provided 𝔼|X0|<∞, at extreme levels, where (Xt)t∈ℤ$$ {\left({X}_t\right)}_{t\in \mathbb{Z}} $$ is a strictly stationary time series, UX$$ {U}_X $$ its tail quantile function, h$$ h $$ is a positive integer and p∈(0,1)$$ p\in \left(0,1\right) $$ is such that p→0$$ p\to ...

Risks of Nocturnal Tornadoes in the Mid-South

open access: yes, 2018
Nocturnal tornadoes are those that occur between the hours of sunset and sunrise. Nocturnal tornadoes have been shown to have an increased fatality rate since nocturnal tornadoes are difficult to spot and often occur when the victims are sleeping.

Spatial Regulation of Silicon Accumulation in Peduncle Confers Sheathed Spike in Barley

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Peduncle, the uppermost internode in cereals, connects the stem to the inflorescence and is critical for the transport of water, nutrients and photosynthetic assimilates. While peduncle length associates with plant height and its elongation is primarily regulated by phytohormones, we report a previously unrecognized mechanism involving the ...
