Suzaku Discovery of Twin Thermal Plasma from the Tornado Nebula [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Tornado nebula (G357.7-0.1) is a mysterious radio source with bright "head" and faint "tail" located in the direction of the Galactic center (GC) region. We here report the discovery of two diffuse X-ray sources at the head and tail of the Tornado with the Suzaku satellite. We found emission lines from highly ionized atoms in the two sources.

Most Say Disaster Spending Does Not Require Offsetting Cuts: A Pew Research Center/Washington Post Survey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
As Oklahoma recovers from severe damage caused by last week's tornado, a majority of Americans (59%) say federal spending in response to natural disasters is emergency aid that does not need to be offset by cuts to other programs, while 29% say such ...

Horizontal Vortex Tubes near a Simulated Tornado: Three-Dimensional Structure and Kinematics

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2019
Supercell thunderstorms can produce a wide spectrum of vortical structures, ranging from midlevel mesocyclones to small-scale suction vortices within tornadoes.

Association between Tornadoes and Instability of Hosting Prominence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We studied the dynamics of all prominence tornadoes detected by the Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly from 2011 January 01 to December 31. In total, 361 events were identified during the whole year, but only 166 tornadoes were traced until the end of their lifetime.

Predicting property damage from tornadoes with zero-inflated neural networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Tornadoes are the most violent of all atmospheric storms. In a typical year, the United States experiences hundreds of tornadoes with associated damages on the order of one billion dollars. Community preparation and resilience would benefit from accurate predictions of these economic losses, particularly as populations in tornado-prone areas increase ...

Apparent Solar Tornado - Like Prominences [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Recent high-resolution observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) have reawakened interest in the old and fascinating phenomenon of solar tornado-like prominences. This class of prominences was first introduced by Pettit (1932), who studied them over many years. Observations of tornado prominences similar to the ones seen by SDO had already

Fast Magnetic Twister and Plasma Perturbations in a 3-D Coronal Arcade

open access: yes, 2014
We present results of 3-D numerical simulations of a fast magnetic twister excited above a foot-point of the potential solar coronal arcade that is embedded in the solar atmosphere with the initial VAL-IIIC temperature profile, which is smoothly extended

Extended U.S. Tornado Outbreak During Late May 2019: A Forecast of Opportunity

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2019
The second half of May 2019 was an unusually active period for tornadic thunderstorms across the U.S. Great Plains, Midwest, and lower Great Lakes. While this period typically coincides with the peak climatological frequency of tornadoes, preliminary ...

The Development of the College Park Tornado of 24 September 2001 [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
The 24 September 2001 College Park, Maryland, tornado was remarkable because of its long-track that passed within a close range of two Doppler radars. This tornado featured many similarities to previous significant tornado events that resulted in widespread damage in urban areas, such as the Oklahoma City tornado of 3 May 1999. The College Park tornado

Deadly Tornadoes in Poland from 1820 to 2015

open access: yes, 2017
Using historical sources derived from 12 Polish digital libraries, an investigation into killer tornado events was carried out. Although some of the cases took place more than 150 years ago, it was still possible to identify tornado phenomena and the ...
