Tornadoes and Tornadogenesis

2007
Tornado structure and dynamics are reviewed. The conditions leading to tornadogenesis also are discussed, as are some of the latest forecasting techniques used to discriminate between tornadic and nontornadic supercells.

Tornadoes and Tornadogenesis

1986
Its extreme violence and dramatic appearance make the tornado the object of awe, fear, and wonder. The tornado and its parent thunderstorm (usually a “supercell”) have stimulated much research, both theoretical and applied. Over the past decade or so, several new developments have allowed for great advances in our understanding of the tornado. However,

How Well Must Surface Vorticity Be Organized for Tornadogenesis?

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2023
Abstract This study investigates whether quasi-random surface vertical vorticity is sufficient for tornadogenesis when combined with an updraft typical of tornadic supercells. The viability of this pathway could mean that a coherent process to produce well-organized surface vertical vorticity is rather unimportant. Highly idealized simulations are used

Role of Intracloud Lightning in Tornadogenesis

2005
Abstract : The role of cloud electrification within supercells and, in particular, the role of lightning in tornadogenesis is re-examined. Rather than cloud-to-ground lightning, it is intracloud lightning that is the culprit for enhancing updraft wind velocities to tornadic levels.

Observational and Theoretical Aspects of Tornadogenesis

1982
The tornado is the most intense atmospheric vortex, and the most mysterious. Many questions still remain about its formation. The field of tornado dynamics has been reviewed recently by DAVIES-JONES (1981). In theoretical work it is generally assumed that the tornado is a vertical vortex, but it is often inclined appreciably.

A numerical study of tornadogenesis in a rotating thunderstorm

Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1979
AbstractThe structure and dynamics of tornadoes and the mechanisms leading to their formation are explored in the context of an axi‐symmetric numerical model of a tornado cyclone. The paper extends a recent study of tornadogenesis by the authors to include explicit representation of moisture effects. The calculations show that the distribution of ...

Tornadogenesis in a Simulated Mesovortex within a Mesoscale Convective System

Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2012
Abstract The Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) is used to simulate a tornadic mesovortex with the aim of understanding the associated tornadogenesis processes. The mesovortex was one of two tornadic mesovortices spawned by a mesoscale convective system (MCS) that traversed southwestern and central Oklahoma on 8–9 May 2007.

Real Challenge of Data Assimilation for Tornadogenesis

2009
Successful recent numerical simulation of tornadogenesis with horizontal resolution of the order of 10 m, O(10 m), and associated temporal resolution of O (0.1 s and 0.01 s for a time-split scheme) requires a vast amount of computer time, impractical to use the simulation model for the model constraint of variational data assimilation and ensemble ...

Radar Updraft Proxies for Supercell Tornadogenesis Prediction

The most fundamental feature of a convective storm is its updraft. The updraft plays a crucial role in the life cycle of a storm and the production of its hazards, including tornadoes. Recent studies, mostly using numerical models, have proposed direct links between updraft properties and tornado formation.

Severe Thunderstorm Evolution and Mesocyclone Structure as Related to Tornadogenesis

Monthly Weather Review, 1979
Abstract Severe thunderstorm evolution is synthesized, using published and unpublished studies of radar, instrumented aircraft, visual and surface observations. These observations reveal the existence of a downdraft (originating at 7–10 km AGL) on the relative upwind side of the updraft.
